The cotton-spinning industry was reported today by the Census Bureau to have operated during September at 939 per cent of capacity, on a single-shift basis, compared with 76.4 per cent for August this year and 54.3 per cent for September last year, when a number of strikes were in progress. = Spinning spindles in place Septem- ber 30 totaled 29,808,220, of which 22,683,818 were active at some time during the month, compared with 30,- 014,994 and 22,046,652 for August this year and 30,954,762 and 22,112,888 for September last year. Officials said this was the frst time the number had fallen below 30,000,000 in any month for 15 years. They said a slight decline had been in progress for sometime and attributed the rec- | out of spindles in the mills. Active spindle hours for September totaled 6,183,763,453, or an average of 207 hours per spindle in place, compared with 5545,241,375 and 185 for August this year and 3,716,261,653 and 120 for September last year. NEW YORK, October 22.—Six years ago today the Nation's security mar- kets paused on the brink of the great- est. financial disaster of modern his- tory. For nearly three years, stocks plunged in the New York markets. Then they started a slow climb up- ward. Today they stand at the high- est point in four years, with the ex- ception of a brief peak in July, 1933. On that October day six years ago, the big stock boom was at its zenith. Then came panic. Men cursed and raved. Tickers jabbered staccato sym- bols. Mobs" milled in meaningless swirls in the street before the New York Stock Exchange. Head Sees Sharp Trade Rise Over Southwest By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, October 22.—Business in the Southwest has passed the “promising stage” and is definitely on the upgrade, Matthew S. Sloan, presi- dent of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railway System, said today. Sloan expressed optimism on the M.-K.-T. prospects in a statement issued from his office. NEW YORK, October 22.—The Finance Committee of Chrysler Corp. was slated to meet: today, it was learned in Wall Street, presumably to consider third-quarter earnings and dividend action. No meeting was scheduled for the entire Board of Directors to act on dividends, however, a spokesman for the company said. It was also said that no date had been set for the forthcoming meeting of the board, which will presumably take dividend action, on the basis of the report of the Finance Committee, Considerable mystery has surrounded the directors’ meeting, in which Wall Street has been taking keenest interest in view of the recent heavy trad- ing in the shares of the company on the Stock Exchange at the highest prices since 1929. An informal inquiry into the trading activity in the shares was recently started by the Securities and Exchange Commission. ‘The possibility of an increase in | the dividend rate has beeen actively discussed in brokerage quarters, in view of the earnings for the first half of the year, reported at $4.31 a share. The company has been paying regular quarterly dividends of only 25 cents a share and quarterly extras of 25 cents, or an annual rate of disburse~ ments of $2.
