D—4 % HELP AN BULLION DEPOSITORY CONTRACT AWARDED Chicago Company Will Build Structure at Fort Knox, Ky., for $468,274. By the Associated Pres Contract for construction of the Government’s bullion depository at Fort Knox, Ky., wes awarded by the Treasury Department yesterday to the Great Lakes Construction Co. of Chicago. The contract price was $468274, the Government reserving the right to specify additional vault reinforce- ments which would increase the amount by $21,000. The structure, designed as an im- pregnable place of safety for the Treasury’s store of gold and silver, will be located in the midst of one of the Nation's strongest military establishments. . CITY MAY RESTORE $9 TO BOY WHO FOUND $10 Council and Mayor Consider Res- olution to Refund Cash Turned Over Three Years Ago. By the Associated Press. MILWAUKEE, Octoter 11.—If the Common Council passes a resolution and if the Mayor signs it, Paul Bruno, 15, soon may obtain $10 he found three years ago in the City Safety Building. But because the city cannot pay out money to a minor, it will be given to Paul's father, and because of legal action and advertising to find the owner, Paul will obtain only $9. Three years ago Paul took the $10 bill to the police after finding it in a corridor. . He requested it be returned to the owner. After holding it for months without a claimant, the police turned the money over to the c)ty treasurer. 'HE scarlet mon= oplane was fly- ing straight into the path of the sun. There was & eurious smile on the white, thin face of the man at the controls. Somewhere down at the Washington Airport were Bruce and Lois, arm in arm, perhaps Per- haps they were watching the little red monoplane, not guessing who was taking it on that flight toward the sun. Only that morn- ing he had over- heard them tatk- ing. He had asked 2 neighbor boy to help him out into the garden, where his ears, grown acutely sensitive to the faintest shadow of sound, had picked up their conversation. They loved him, those two. He had known that, of course, all along. And they loved each other, too. He hadn't known that before this morn- ing. There was another thing. too. The doctor had told Lois that it would be all finished in a few months. He hadn’t known that before, but he'd susvected it for a long time He knew something else that Lois didn't imagine he knew. They were nearly out of money now. Hospital expenses and doctor’s bills had been high Now, the continual drain of caring for a helpless invalid was rapidly using up what was left. * ok ok ok UDDENLY the scarlet monoplane took on added speed. ‘The man and woman down on the field watching it were not seeing it very clearly. While their eyes followed it mechanically, their thoughts were far away from what had now become a little red speck in the mists along the Potomac. “Lois,” said the man softly, “Lois, it’s been a long time since I've seen Tom as happy as he's been this after- noon ” She nodded slowly. “I know. We ought to bring him out here oftener. I've thought a lot of times that it would only make him unhappy, but that was a mistake. It does him a Iot of good to come down here and chin with the boys around the fleld, Just the way he always used to do.” ‘There was a little silence and when Bruce spoke again his voice was very gentle. “Lofs, Tom knows . . . that he isr’t going to be around long.” 8he turned to him, wide-eyed. “When you went back to the car after your coat, he turned to me and asked me to promise that when he was gone, I'd always look after You. ‘Oh, Bruce!” “Don't take it that way, darling. It’s much better that he does know, and that he knows I always will take care of you. Suddenly he reached for her hand, held it very tight. “But I hate to think of it being this way. When your time comes, you've got to face it. But when mine comes, I want to be fin- ished, all at one time. When it hap- pens to me, I want to go . . . flying.” “T know, Bruce, that’s the hardest thing for Tom to bear, I think. Sud- denly Lois stopped, looking up, and frowned. “Look, Bruce—the red plane up there . . . isn't that the one? Didn't we leave Tom talking to the pilot?” His gaze followed hers. “Yes, I think it is.” “Oh I hope he hasn't left Tom alone down there! Overhead the drome of & motor had grown very faint and far away. “Hey—hey, you!” The round-faced boy hurried toward them. “What's the matter? Anything wrong?” “Where's Tom . . . where's Capt. Roscoe?” “Why—he’s up.” “Up? What do you mean?” “Why—" the boy stared at them in bewilderment. “We'd been talking about the new monoplane, and he asked me if he could try her out, and gosh I was tickled to death to have Capt. Roscoe take her up, and He turned and followed their gaze. The little scarlet monoplane seemed to be faltering in its path toward the afternoon sun. Far out there in the mists it began to circle crazily, wildly, without direction. The round-faced boy gave a sud- den exclamation. “Say—what's the matter with him up there?” Bruce caught the girl's arm sud- denly. “Don’t look, Lois!” “But what’s the matter? Why should . . .
