STONE. Retail sales in leading Washington department stores in September re- vealed a jump of 26.2 per cent over September, 1934, the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond announcd today. For the first nine months of the pres- ent year retail sales in the Capital were 15.7 per cent better than last year. This remarkable increase is nearly double the average gain of 14 per cent for the whole fifth district in Septem- ber and almost four times the 8 per cent September advance registered by 528 dpartment stores all over the ‘United States. The nine months’ com- parisons are even more favorable to ‘Washington, the gain for the whole country being only 4 per cent against the more than 15 per cent advance here. In summarizing reports from 60 department stores, the Richmond bank makes the following percentage comparisons for September and the nine months with the like periods a year ago in the leading cities in the fifth district: Jan.-Sept., Sept., 1935, 1935. Baltimore, Md.. Charleston, 2 Charleston, W. Va._. Huntington, W. Va.. Lynchburg, Va. Norfolk, Va. Richmond, Va. Washington - ‘Winston-Salem, Other cities.. Fifth district. United States State figures. Virginia .. +14 Richmond Tops 12 Districts. The Federal Reserve Board here to- day reported that the Richmond Re- gerve, which includes Washington, led the other trade areas in retail sales advances in September. The national report said that department store kales increased from August to Sep- tember by more than the usual sea- konal amount, and the board’s index, which makes allowance for differences in the number of business days and for usual seasonal movements, was 82 per cent of the 1923-1925 average in September, as compared with 79 in August and 75 in September a year ago. With the exception of March, the board said, the 82 index was the highest point reached since Decem- ber, 1931 Percentage changes by districts with September last year and the first nine months of 1934 are as follows: Jan. 1 to **Sep. *Sep.30.
