Gainers of 1 to 3 points included Aluminum Co., Great Atlantic & Pa- cific, Bell Telephone of Canada, Gen- eral Tire & Rubber, Great Northern Paper, Humble Oil, Pan-American Airways, Pittsburgh Plate Glass, Swift Internacional and National Container. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, October 11.—Con- tinued improvement in retail distri- bution, aided by favorable weather and the freer spending mood of con- sumers was cited today by Dun & Bradstreet, Inc., as the feature of the week’s trade. “With ideal shopping weather pre- vailing in most districts, retail sales rose as much as 5 to 15 per cent for the week, but the spread over the 1934 comparative has started to narrow, due to the rising trend at that time,” the survey said. “This held the estimated range of increase for the country as a whole down to 6 to 12 per cent over the totals for the same week last year. “Following the sharp expansion of consumer buying over the week end, reorders to wholesalers were the heav- iest for the season, with women's coats, fur garments, children’s dresses and men’s clothing chiefly specified. “There was & steady flow of busi- ness from rural districts, with the size of the individual orders increased and fill-in requests for staples more fre- quent. Covering of future needs made wider strides as additional price in- creases were announced. ““In fact, the placing of advance commitments featured buying in most markets, as delivery delays became “Buying of Christmas goods pro- ceeded at a better rate, and orders thus far placed for greeting cards, gift items, jewelry, silverware, furni- ture and electrical appliances have | “Numerous -announcements of plant improvement progress have heavy goods industry. Spurt in Chrysler Shares Stirs Talk Of Dividend Raise By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, October 11.—A rise in the price of Chrysler Corp. shares of more than $3 to a new high since 1929 at $76.25 a share on the New York Stock Exchange was ac- companied yesterday by conjecture in brokerage circles as to whether directors may not increase the divi- dent rate at their meeting slated for October 22. ‘While comment was lacking from officers of the company security ana- lysts pointed out that the present rate of dividends, amounting to 25 cents regular and 25 cents extra quarterly, is substantially under the recent rate of earnings. Earnings for the first half amounted to $4.31 a share. Motor companies usually make muck' of their profit in the first half, but the aggregate for the year is expected to be well above the present rate. SHORT-TERM SECURITIES. (Reported by Chas. D.
