FEATHER INHE RHAT JULIE ANNE MOORE INSTALLMENT XXIX. OWED by the belligerent atti- tude of the two plainclothes men, the hotel clerk admitted that Senator Run- brecker and a Carl Balmer had been registered there. They had checked out, he said, shortly after breakfast. The doorman remembered the two gentlemen perfectly . . . an oldish man, rather distinguished looking, and & powerfully built young man who was bit unsteady on his feet and smelled * strongly of liquor. They had gone off | in a Black and Yellow cab. Yes, he could identify the driver—name was Tony. Nice young fellow . “Sure I remember where I took| *em,” said Tony Fachetti at the ta\l-l cab office. “I toock 'em to Berwyn Field. The young egg give me a two- buck tip. He was plastered. He was talking his head off.” “What time did you leave Berwyn Field after taking them there?” “Three or four hours ago, I guess. Right around half past 9. A few minutes later a police cruiser durted away from the curb in front of the taxicab office and went off with siren shrieking. A It could not have been later than a quarter after 10 when Lee dropped down onto Berwyn Field. “I don’t know what is the matter with Carl,” Senator Runbrecker told Lee. “Unless the strain he went | through wiih the kidnapers got the| best of his nerves. He was all right | until about 2 o'clock this morning, when I woke up and found he nad been out and brought up a supply of | whisky. He has been drinking ever since. And”—said the Senator, irri- | tably—“talking. He's completely out of his senses—so pay no attention to anything he says.” «What's he talking about, Senator?” They were walking to the field office then. “Dean's and Fuhrman's deaths, principally,” Senator Runbrecker said. “You need not be surprised if he ac- cuses you of the murder. He has al- rendv charged that I killed my own son.” Lee shook his head. “Too bad. Well we'll load him in end get started. | Is Selma with him?” The Senator said sadly that his| daughter was not with them, “They told Carl we would find her at home when we reutrned. I don't know, Lee. I've a feeling—" The door of the little office burst open and Carl stumbled out. “Well, if {t—Lee, old boy, old boy, how goes —good old Lee and where—" “Go along with the Senator, Carl, while I get your luggage.” Lee said. | “T'd Like to get off before a crowd | gathers.” With the aid of the fleld personnel | they got Carl inside the cabin and settled in a seat. Three minutes later | they were in the air—Washington | ‘bound. It was almost 3 o'clock when the Chicago police cruiser screamed its way up to the Berwyn field hangar. A mechanic gave the detectives the information they wanted, then one of them went into the office to telephone. Presently he came out and led the| way back to the car. “That cleans it up for us” he said to his com-| panion. ““They're advising Wash- ington the plane’s due there any time . . . Too bad we didn’t get the tip off sooner. I'd like to get a look at Lee Monday. Wonder where he figures in with the guy we're after?” Bill Hudson was glad the Justic Department had asked him about Carl. He didn't give a darn about Carl, but it gave him something to think about—something to think about instead of the thing he had been thinking about constantly since he had left Ann at the apartment yesterday. Twice this morning he had practically decided to kick over the traces—his own better judgment, his loyalty to Lee, his job if necessary. Ann loved him. He was sure of that. Not because of what her father had sald. Ann had made it all too evi- dent when she told him good-by . . . And God knows he loved the very ground she stood on. But here they were just pulling out of Baltimore . .. and he hadn't kicked over the traces . . . and that was over now. By the time Ann met Lee at 7 o'clock he'd be far away. And the farther the better . . . But he was & fool just the same. Her father had called his number. A man with gumption wouldn't have stalled eround while another man married the girl he loved . . . Let him! Why, he had engineered the whole thing, right from the first. Ann never would have met Lee if it hadn't oeen for him. And then when she talked to him over the phone after pulling him out of a booze joint that night she had as good as told him she was in love with him. And what had he said then? . . . Told her she had to give Lee a break . , . Fooll Fooll Fooll , ., Bill stared out the window and counted telegraph poles . . . But his thoughts ran on, feverishly, inter- minably, He had been a fool and a coward. He had stubbornly refused the only thing in this worid he had ever really wanted. Worst still, he had left Ann to go through that rot- ten farce alone . .. What if Lee had millions! Ann didn't love him—and if she didn't love him . . . Bill was standing in the vestibule of the coach when the train stopped at | Philadelphia. He raced into the wait- ing room, found the information desk. “What time does the next train leave for Washington?” The face of the man behind the desk came up, slowly. “One on track 6 now if you hurry,” he said. Bill wheeled about, then suddenly froze in his tracks. “Better be sure you mean business, you big lummox,” he told himself. “If you go back, you've got to go through with it.” Ann called Mollie from an F street shop. It was only a short distance to the Globe and she thought Mollie might sieal away from her work long enough to have something cold to drink with them. The monient Mollle recognized her voice, she said, “Ann—I was just wondering how in heaven’s name I could get hold of you. Lee’s due in at 8 o'clock. Never mind how I know. He stopped at a field outside Chicago and took the Senator and Carl on board—" “No . . .!"” Ann cried. “He couldn't have, Mollie. Bill wired Lee last night. ‘Tm telling you, honey. They're due at the airport around 3. If you're Dot* at the hotel, take your mother there and meet me here at the Globe #s quickly as possible . . . the police sre going to arrest Carl the minute they land. And they'll keep Lee busy afor the time being, which means there won't be any wedding bells tomorro Hurry up now.” Let them arrest Carl and qm JLee-all they liked, Ann told as she made her way back to her mother. She had been steeling her- | self to go through with it this week end and she certainly didn't mean ];.4: nin;ke it more difficult by putting off. - Lee did not arrive at the Washing- ton Afrport around 3, however. At the moment that Mollie finished her conversation with Ann Lee was get- ting to work on his motor . . . what the trouble was he had no idea. Ten ymmubes after they passed over Fred- | erick, Md,, the motor cut out—dead. And now, hcre they were, miles from nowhere with not a house in sight. | While he made a routine check | to discover the trouble, Lee heard Carl's voice going on endlessly. He was back on the murders now, ac- cusing every one of importance in Washington. And the worst of it was, he was drinking. He had & | bottle in his bag. | Just as Lee discovered that his | feed line was completely clogged, and he let himself down to the ground, ,Carl came up. Carl had insisted ! upon getting out of the plane and | had been lylng on his back on the 1ground, alternately singing and talk- ng. | “Listen, Lee, old pal” Carl sald, as he staggered nearer. “Youre a | good old pal. You did me a big favor once. I'm going to show you 1 appe—appeci—appe—dammit-—ap- | pre-ci-ate. ~That's the word. I'm | going to tell you the truth. You | want to know who bumped off Fuhr- | man and Deane. You want to know? Well, listen . . .” Laughing, Lee pulled Carl toward | the open cabin door. “Get inside and ‘ tell the Senator about it, Carl. That's the boy.” Leveling off at 2,500 feet a little later, Lee glanced in the mirror and grinned as he saw Carl bending toward the Senator, talking like & machine, illustrating with sweeping gestures. The City of Washington lay spread out before them when Lee heard the little door behind him open and turned to find Carl teetering on the single step. “The Senator—the great Senator— Run-brrr-ecker want t’know if the | great Lee Monday, my old pal, Lee Monday, will shircle the gren. Wash- ington Monument . . . Lee grinned. “I get you,” he sald. “Go sit down now before you tumble overboard.” He looked back at Sena- rapidly. Lee had completed a wide circle of the Mall and was turning back toward the airport, heading straight ‘for the Monument, when he felt a | jar and, looking back, saw Carl kick- | ing violently at the cabin door and at the same moment became aware of the look of horror on Senator | Runbrecker's face. Quickly Lee pushed open the little door behind him and shouted at the top of his voice. Carl, strangely sober, | wheeled around. Then his head wob- bled and he grinned. | “How d'you get the door open, old palsy . . .2” he called back. “Don't | want to open it, you know , . , just | want to know how—" | “Sit down!” Lee cried, angrily. For |a moment Lee glanced down from their relatively low altitude of 1,500 feet and saw the white marble shaft less than a thousand feet below and suddenly something clicked in his brain and he remembered what should have occurred to him long ago. But | he had remembered it too late, for | when his eyes came up again and swung around toward the cabin, he | found himself staring at the muzzle of an automatic. Carl Balmer bellowed, “Open that door or I'll plug you . . .!” He unquestionably meant to make nodded and as he reached for the lever that opened the cabin door Carl made & sudden iunge at Senator Runbrecker. JERUSALEM, September 321.—Iraq |is to have a new railroad linking her with Europe, according to the Ameri- can Express Travel Service. By the Associated Press. Five crack investigators of the Fed- eral Alcohol Administration will be sent into the country with sealed or- derat.huwukmmvmovvem- ment's enforcement of ‘“falr trade practices” in the liquor industry. While these agents check reports of violations coming from trade associa- tions and State liquor suthorities, the F. Coincidentally, many clerks have been commandeered to ald in handling the 200 permit applications | ________1 pouring into the office every day. The five investigators will be or- dered to widely scattered key points, probably in the metropolitan centers. The F. A. A. estimates 6,000 per- mits will be issued here in the next six weeks.
