By the Assoclated Press. NEW YORK, October 8. —Handicaps imposed by intense competition and narrow profit margins have prevented the automobile tire manufacturing companies from enjoying any marked recovery in earnings this year in spite of a largely increased production of motor cars. ‘This is the unvarying report of those who keep themselyes informed on de- | velopments in fhe industry. And it is in curious contrast with the testimony concerning the value of the year’s high rate of motor output to the steel in- dustry, the glass industry and to those numerous manufacturing interests which constitute the motor accessories group. Unable to Get Share. All of these have profited in a com- mensurate way from the accelerated rate of car production. The tire manu- fecturers alone seem to have been unable to carry a fair share of the increased gross income to the net in- come column. Inzpility to obtain satisfactory prices is a perennial complaint with the tire makers. ‘The background of this problem is sketched by the Fitch Pub- lishing Co. in the following comment: “Competition conditions in the tire industry continue extremely keen. This is true not only between the different manufacturers, but more especially in the retail trade. “Mall order houses, oil filling sta- tions, directly owned cheins and inde- pendent retail dealers have all been competing principally on a price basis, | and with costs and expenses continu- | ing on a high level, tire companies’ earnings have suffered in proportion.” Tire Prices Reduced. The survey goes on to say that sales of tires for original equipment con- | tinwe large and that such sales 1or& the third quarter and early weeks of the current quafter are likely to| Tegister further gains due to the earlier | production of 1936 models on the pnrt of automobile manufacturers. “It is not likely, however, that such sales will be reflected in increased earnings,” it adds. “Prices on tires sold for original equipment are under- stood to have been reduced. This price |cut further reduces manufacturers' | profit margins at a time when heavy production is to begin.” A further deterrent to expansion of earnings, according to the Fitch Co.. has been the Industry’s inability to build up a larger replacement demand This has been attributed to the prog- ress made in tire retreading. three | unbroken cars on_ track. | U.
