NEW YORK, October 8.—The price of domestic copper has been advanced to 9% cents & pound from the 9-cent level that has prevailed since Septem- ber 16. The boost in the domestic metal| followed successive advances in the price of the red metal abroad until it surpassed the home level yesterday at 9.10 cents a pound, c. {. f. European base ports. Large orders for war pur- poses and commercial activity were mostly responsible for the increased demand. On June 27, last, what was then known as “Blue Eagle” copper was lowered from 9 to 8 sents & pound fol- lowing collapse of N. R. A. and this figure prevailed until August 19 when it was elevated to 83, cents a pound as a result of the steady creeping up of the foreign price. Another mark- up of % cent a pound on September 16 brought the figure to that prevail- ing up to late yesterday. Leading wire and cable companies followed the increase with a mark-up of their magnet wire products 3 cent & pound. Foreign sales of copper were re- ported large during early trading to- day. NEW YORK, October 8 (#)—Bar silver steady, unchanged at 65%. . s L] WHOLESALE INDEX AT NEW HIGH MARK Reaches Peak of Recovery Period at 79.5 Per Cent of 1926-28. ‘The wholesale commodity price index of the National Fertilizer Assos ciation advanced to a new high leve} in the recovery period in the week ended October 5, and is at the highest point since December, 1930. The index rose to 79.5 per cent of thd 1926-1928 average, from 79.0 in the preceding week. A month ago the index was 78.6 and a year ago 75.3. ‘The advance in the index was dus largely to upturns in farm commod« itles. The textiles group advanced materially due to higher prices for cotton, wool, burlap, hemp and sisalj silk prices were lower. Food prices were generally higher with the prices of sugar, flour, potatoes, apples, prunes and raisins advancing, and beans, canned peas, and canned peaches declining. The grains, feeds and lve stock index advanced only slightly, the net result of higher prices for all grains, good cattle, sheep and lambs, and lower prices for feedstuffs, choice cattle and hogs. Higher prices for butter, and most vegetable oils, and lower prices for lard resulted in an advance in the fats and oils group. Finished steel and scrap steel prices were higher during the latest week, and tin prices were lower, accounting for the slight rise in the metals index. The advance in the fuels group was due to advances in anthracite coal prices. The termination of the dis- couny on potash prices, together with a rise in the price of cottonseed meal, caused the rise in the fertilizer mate rials index. Forty-seven price series included in the index advanced last week and 12 declined; in the preceding week there were 24 advances and 25 declines; in ! the second preceding week there were 40 advances and 15 declines, e Lane Bryant, Inc—September sales | were up 3.6 per cent; nine months 'off 0.9 per cent.
