THOMAS O'BRIEN SUCCUMBS AT 77 Engineer Helped Build Pan- ama Canal and 0ld Post Office Building. Thomas O'Brien, Washington engi- neer, who helped build the Panama Canal and aided in construction of the old Post Office Building and the Mc- Millan Reservoir, died yesterday at his home, 5403 Ninth street. Mr. O'Brien, who was 77, came to Washington from his birthplace at Little Falls, N. Y., in 1884. His first position here was as superintendent of the old Ninth Street Railway, under the Washington Rafiway & Electric Co. He was superintendent of con- struction of the McMillan Reservoir later and supervised foundation work for the old Post Office Building. In 1905 Mr. O'Brien went to Pan- ama where he worked as an engineer in the building of the canal. Some time later, he was appointed a Fed- eral customs inspector, from which post he retired in 1929. Mr. O'Brien and his wife, Eliza- beth O'Brien, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary December 30, 1934, Besides his widow, he is survived by a son, Thomas O'Brien, jr, and three daughters, Mrs. Mary Ferris, Mrs. Lillian Bissell and Mrs. Eliza- beth Ladd. Funeral services will be held Mon- day at 8:30 a.m. at his home, followed by mass at the Church of the Nativity at 9 am. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery. FRED EBERLE DIES OF HEART ATTACK Retired Manager of Marshall Hall Amusement Park Was 73 Years 0ld. Fred Eberle, 73, of 411 Fourth street, who retired in 1931 after 20 years' service as manager of Marshall Hall amusement park for the Mount Vernon & Marshall Hall Steamship Co., died today after a heart attack at_his home. Mr. Eberle was a native of West- | field, N. Y, near Buffalo. When he first came to Washington he was employed for a number of years as | superintendent of the Mertens & Agnew Brick Manufacturing Co,, owned by the late Fred Mertens, father of Fred Mertens, jr., president of the Mount Vernon & Marshall Hall Steamship Co. Later he was named manager of | the amusement park and served in that capacity until 1931, when the company leased its properties to the Wilson Line. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Williams of Boston; a | brother, Frank Eberle of Buffalo, and | a sister. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
