All three projects are now in the | throes of red tape.imposed by the | city’s zoning law, which has to be amended in each instance to permit | the proposed erections. Hearing Set for Tuesday. A public hearing on the requested rezoning of land wanted for two of | the projects, said to include a pro- | posed $1,000,000 unit in the 600 block of North Washington street and a planned $1,500.000 apartment village | along the north side of Washington street extended, has been set for Tues- day, October 2. The Portner Realty Co. of Wash- ington, which has requested the re- ronings, is being delayed in complet- ing its deals for the two properties until the land is rezoned. A third project, involving the ex-*| Ppenditure of $500,000 for construction of an 82-apartment building on the west side of South Washington street overlooking historic Hunting Creek | and the Potomac River, was presented | to the Alexandria City Council this week, with a request for rezoning of a city block on which the building will be located. Wing-Type Structure Planned. Plans for this project, which show 8 wing-type Colonial brick strycture, | approximately 350 feet long, were pre- | sented to the council on behalf of a Washington real estate firm. They call for a building somewhat similar to the Wardman Park Hotel in Wash- | ington, with two wings of four stories | and a main structure of six stories. Atop the main structure, the plans | eall for a modern penthouse, the first | ever proposed for this historic city, in which George Washington owned | a town house, Robert E. Lee spent his boyhood and Gen. Braddock planned | his ill-fated campaign. \ Other deals for the erection cf smaller apartment houses are in prog- | ress here and still others are in a | wind which bids to blow through n\ number of large old family residences to transform them into modern apart- ment dwellings. On the whole, Fall is the most fa- vorable time to plant hardy lilies Bulbs which have been held in cold storage over the Winter may be ob- tained and planted in the Spring: but | & record of thousands of cases shows that the percentage of success is much greater with Fall planted bulbs, in spite of the hazards of Winter. Cold weather has no terrors for hardy lilies. There is, only one thing | they fear and that is too much water. Good drainage in the case of lilies | does not mean only that they should; not be planted in a bog. It means that they shall be entirely free from water about them during Winter and Summer alike.
