F ALL the lovely willows growing in Eastern North America, the golden osier is the most beloved. Its lovely yellow twigs are your identification in the winter, and they ere also the reason for its name. ‘What would the many streams all over their range mean to us without the presence of these trees? Sturdy giants, standing guard over the love- some water spots and fishing holes, their vigor and dignity attest their stability and strength, and commend them to us at once as worthwhile neighbors. Wouldn't it be fun if we could know where the many children of this tree are established? For along the thousands of miles, winding the way to the sea, offspring of the golden osier send their toes into the moist earth and reach their slender branches toward the sky. True to willow tradition, the twigs, branches and seeds begin to grow the moment they find themselves in a stationary position. When you think that all you have to do to have a willow tree grow in a moist spot of your own selection guide for | early Spring the typical willow leaves, sparingly serrate, with white silky hair linings and glossy green tree for you at once. Millions of slender leaves, some right side out, others showing their silvery lining, dance with every breeze. How cheerful and cool they always make you feel, even in Midsummer. The flowers are in loose catkins, each one having a bract with a hairy margin. There are pod, and each one is provided with a life belt or float. You will recall that the willow fam- ily is a very ambitious one. It has pushed its range from the equator to the Arctic circle, and no climate or soil is without its own willow. The following year dozens of baby osiers would be reaching toward the sun. The osier, as you can see, has a short trunk and a regular spreading top. Often an ancient tree will be 40 or even 60 feet high. The rough gray bark of the trunk is a lovely contrast to the golden sheen of the twigs. In the Winter the buds, with their protecting caps or scales of two coats, may easily be seen. In the Most of them prefer moist spots and water, in which to see their lovely re- flections, others like to be different and grow on the mountain tops. Willow wood is uniformly weak and light. This sounds as if it were not valuable, but the uses to which the wood has been put since time imme- morial show how important it is to us. S — Mickley THE arms here reproduced represent ! the ancient family of Michelet, of the City of Metz, in Germany. A tra- dition in the Michelet, Mickley family states that the name is derived from the Greek name Dionysius Micheletus, meaning “illustrious,” and that one Frenchman named Odeard brought one Micheletus from Constantinople to Paris. His descendants flourished in “France until the time of Charlemagne, and called themselves Michelets. This story relates how Edward Michelet ac- companied the emperor on his journeys to Spain and on various hunting expe- ditions in the Pyrenes and Basque Mountains. The family lived in Ger- many for many generations, whence they came to America. John Jacob Mickley was the founder of the family in America. He came over as a single man prior to the American Revolution, bought land in what is now Lehigh County, Pa., and established his home on a large tract of land now known as “Mickleys.” He was married in 1765 to Susanne Miller. An interesting story is told of how the patriot. John Jacob Mickley, con- cealed and conveyed the Liberty Bell and chimes in his wagons during the perilous days of 1777, from Philadel- phia to Allentown, where he hid them under the floor of Zion Reformed RENOVIZE. .. your home Renovizing Eighty-six Years EBERLY’S 31108 K N.W.
