The general level of wholesale com- Modity prices was again higher in the week ended September 14, according to the index of the National Fertilizer Association. This index last week ad- vanced to 78.8 per cent of the 1926-28 average, from 78.6 in the preceding week. A month ago the index was 78.9, the highest point reached this | year, and a year ago was 76.4. Four of the component groups of the index moved upward last week, with the most important advance oc- curring in the textiles group. A slight advance in cotton prices as well as in woolen yarns, hemp, sisal and silk accounted for the rise in the textiles index; a slight decline occurred in the price of burlap. The foods index again rose last week to the highest point reached during the recovery period, which began in early 1933. The general trend of foodstuff prices was upward, with seven com- modities included in the group ad- vancing and only one declining. The foods index has risen 14.2 per cent siace the low point of the year, the week of January 5. A slight rise oc- curred in the .uel index as a result | of higher prices for crude petroleum. Rising prices for hides and leather, wrich more than offset a decline in crude rubber, were responsible for the rise in the miscellaneous commodities group. Farm product prices were mixed during the week, with eight com- modities represented in the grains, feeds and live stock index declining in | price and seven advancing; the group index declined slightly. A decline in the building materials index was the net result of a drop in lumber prices | and a slight rise in the prices of lin- | seed oil. | Thirty price series included in the index advanced last week and 17 de: | clined: | were 29 advances and 22 declines; in | the second preceding week there were | 23 advances and 27 declines, . BALTIMORE, September 17— Business skies in the United States are clearing, momentarily at least, Harper Sibley, president »f the Cham- ber of Commerce of the United States, told the Baltimore Asiociation of Commerce yesterday. But, s0 long as the outlook is “clouded by the shadow of impend- ing change in the methods of Gov- ernment and the substitution of cen- tralized control for local and State supervision, business cannot stand condemned for proceeding with cau- | tion,” he added. its “incursions” into matters “tra- ditionally” reserved for the States and for its “disturbing tendency toward contralization of power over the affairs of all business and the regimentation of the lives of capital and labor alike.” He attacked the Federal agricultural program, the Guffey coal bill and the social se- curity bill. Due to the “staggering burden” of debt placed on the country, he sald, “there is beginning to be apparent a widely prevalent sense of uneasiness and misgiving Wuhmmange SALES.
