Steel Unites Two Subsidiaries, Fairless Is Chief ly m Almhm Press. 'ORK, September 17.—Thi Unmd suus Steel Corp. has formed new subsidiary, the Carnegie- Fairless, who lately joined the corpo- ration, will be appointed president, it was learned today. Fairless, a former vice president of Republic Steel, will be introduced formally as the president of the new unit at a luncheon in Pittsburgh to- MOrTow. The new company will unify the operations of Carnegie Steel Co. of Pittsburgh and Illinois Steel Co. of Chicago, the largest subsidiaries of the parent company. This step is in line with the general unification plan out- lined by the steel corporation in a formal announcement made two weeks ago. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, September 17.—A 22 per cent increase in the net income of 158 steel companies in the first half of 1935 over the first half of 1934 was disclosed today in a survey | by the American Iron & Steel In- etitute. The companies comprise about 96 per cent of the total ingot and fin- ished steel capacity of the industry and more than 93 per cent of the pig iron producing capacity, and they accounted for & net income aggre- gating $30,923,927 after all charges in the first six months of this year, compared with $25,305,232 in 1934. Based on production, the net this year represented about $2.20 a ton on all iron and steel products pro- duced for sale, against $1.70 a ton on the gross tonnage in last year's first half, the institute found. NEW YORK, September 17.—Di~ rectors of the Electric Autolite Co. today ordered resumption of divi- dends on the common stock with a payment of 30 cents, payable October 1 to stock of record September 27. This is the first dividend declared on the junior shares since January 2, 1933. At the same time it was announced that the directors had declared a regular dividend of $1.75 a share on the preferred stock, payable October 1 to stock of record September 27. Royce G. Martin, president of the corporation, in a statement following the meeting said, “The outlook for the balance of the year is gratifying.” Plans for further expansion of the company’s facilities were revealed by Martin, who stated that in addition ta acquiring the assets of the moto- meter Gauge and Equipment Co. Auto-Lite had recently taken over the Alemite Die Casting & Manufacturing Co. at Woodstock, Ill, and the assets of the Central Brass & Fixture Co. at | Springfield, Ohio.
