REPORTS OF GAINS INTRADE CONTINUE Air Travel Sets High Record in July—Retail Sales Increase. By the Associated Press. A new record for air passenger travel in July, big crowds at Labor day celebrations and continued retail trade improvement were reported yes- terday by the Commerce Department. Scheduled air lines carried 85,193 passengers in July. The previous high was 73,896 in June. From the stand- point of passenger miles flown, the air lines set & new record in July for the fifth successive month. Passenger miles (one passenger flown one mile) in the month were 34,040,925, The department noted that its busi- ness reports from 33 citles “indicated that retall trade throughout the country maintained a higher volume during the week ended Wednesday, September 4, than during the cor- responding week last year.” Labor Day Crowd Big. Niagara Falls authorities, said the report, declared the Labor day crowd was the largest since 1928. Min- neapolis reported the greatest attend- ance at the Minnesota State Fair in 15 years, while he Tri-State Fair at Memphis was said to have eclipsed re- cent records. “Attendance at moving picture theaters over the week end, due to & great extent to the holiday influ- ence, was said to have established new high records in a number of cities,” the department added. While the Labor day holiday made some inroads into the volume of many lines, the department said, business, as compared with a year ago, re- flected improvement. ‘Wholesale Trade Better. “The wholesale trade in general throughout the country was said to reflect steadily improved condition in Tetail lines.” the report added. “Particular emphasis was made on the stronger demand for furniture and various other lines of household equip- ment which followed the large amount of home building and repair work in progress for several months past.” Reports from Cleveland noted that residential construction and alter- ations for the first eight months of the year were $1,000,000 ahead of the same period in 1934. In Atlanta resi- dential construction was 150 per cent ahead for the first seven months of | the year, while in Los Angeles the value of building permits for eight months exceeded those of the last year by 153 per cent. At least one apartment dweller in the Rock Creck | Park section has solved the problem. Almost any morning he can be seen reclining on & park bench while his pooch runs his tongue out. The bench is on the top of a hill. The man throws, or sometimes he merely kicks a rubber ball far down the hill. ‘The dynamic pooch races 100 yards down, 100 yards back again. For a long time the game goes on like that until the fat man tires. * K K ¥ EVEN FOR A FLAT TIRE. Back from Europe, where he dem- onstrated the steel process to the German government, Dr. Bossard said that his invention, when marketed, will cut in half steel costs fom small- tool manufacturers. “The object of the process is to enable any small-tool manufacturer to purchase low-grade steels, easily workable, and by a simple heat ineth- od carbonize the outer layer of the steel 50 that it assumes all the prop- erties of the finest high speed tool steels,” Dr. Bossard explained. 15th and H Sts.
