NEW YORK, September 7.—In the most active Saturday turnover since February 10, 1934, the stock market Helps Boost Stock Prices as By the Assoclated Press. The Grain Futures Commission notified the 15 grain future mar- kets today that pending disposi- tion of an appeal from its sus- pension sentence, Thomas M. Howell and Arthur W. Cutten would be permitted to trade. . Howell and Cutten were barred from trading for two years each after the commission had found them guilty of violating the grain futures act. The commission said that a churned irregularly ahead today, scor- ing gains of as much as 3 or more points in a few thinly traded issues. Measured by the Associated Press average of 60 stocks the market ad- vanced 0.5 of a point to 49.9, a new high for the year and the highest level reached since February 23, 193a. At today's closing prices, the average of industrial shares stood at the highest point since the early Autumn of 1931. Two forces were at work in the ‘market today, brokers said. Pushing shares up were the bullish sentiment generated in some quarters by the President’s “breathing spell” state- ment and a number of favorable re- ports on business. On the other hand, the forward progress of equities was held in check to some extent by the weight of profit- taking which appeared today following the gains since Wednesday. Steel Report Impressive. Financial circles were impressed Wwith the report on steel production by the American Iron & Steel Insti- tute. It showed output in August 24 per cent ahead of July, the first time in several years that the August total had surpassed any preceding months of the year. In addition, the August gain over the like month of 1934 emounted to 110 per cent. Transactions totaled 1289960 Bhares for today's two-hour session, compared with 2155100 shares in the five-hour trading on Friday. The opening was unusually brisk as & few stocks changed hands in blocks of 1,000 to 10,000 shares at advancing prices. Volume in the first hour amounted to 730,000 shares, the heav- lest since May 28. Some Extra Large Gains, Although the majority of stocks eoasted forward for gains of fractions to a point or more, a few issues bounded up around 3 to 4 or more points on limited transactions. These included Allied ~ Chemical at 164, American Can at 144%, American Telephone at 143%;, Auburn at 38% and Columbian Carbon at 91. Gainers of fractions to a point. or 0 were Air Reduction at 144, Bethle- hem Steel at 40, General Electric at 827, Montgomery Ward at 36s, Radio at 8 Sears-Roebuck at 69% and U. S. Steel at 46'5. UNEVENTFUL WEEK MARKS BUSINESS ACTIVITY ABROAD (Continued From First Page.) few newer ships which may form a part of the Italian transport fleet. “Germans still lack the funds to bring about any striking revival of retail trade, but manufacturers of heavy goods—machinery, construction equipment and materials—are steadily boosting their production programs. First urge after Hitler came to power was the huge public works program which the government started. Re- cently, the rush to rearm has become a more important force, for volume of business is large and the number of industries which benefit is wider even than for public works. Ship building, for instance. has been operating for the last few years at only 10 per cent or 15 per cent of capacity. Now, or- cers on hand will keep the yards fully occupied until the end of 1937. While there have been a few foreign orders (efforts of foreigners to liquidate their holdings of German funds). the bulk of the business is Berlin's own deter- mination to build up a navy. Radio Show Opens. “The German radio show opened in Berlin at the end of August (an important section of it was destroyed by fire two days after the opening) and called to the attention of the public the remarkable strides which have been made by this industry un- der the impetus of a governmental regime determined to push its popu- larity by the use of radio above all other means. More than 4,000,000 German households had radios in the last count before Hitler assumed office. In the two and a half years of the Hitler regime, this total’ has mounted to 6.500,000, or 36 per cent of all homes. Comparisons are drawn with 55 per cent of all households in pos- session of radio sets in Great Britain, 61 per cent in Denmark and 69 per cent in the United States. These fig- ures indicate that the saturation point has not yet been reached in Germany, although the tempo of fur- ther increase is likely to be somewhat retarded.” —_— EXPORT PICK-UP SEEN.
