Somervell In Florida to Begin “Biggest Canal” FormerDistrict Engineer to Supervise Con- struction. $5,000,000 Fund Au- thorized by President Last Monday. Lieut. Col. Brehon B. Somervell, who served here as District engineer for the War Department from 1926 to 1930, arrived yesterday in Jackson- ville, Fla, to supervise construction of the new ship canal across the northern section of the State. Described by Col. Somervell as the *“biggest canal ever undertaken and the New Deal’s most outstanding proj- ect,” the canal will be financed at the start by a $5,000,000 fund author- ized for the purpose last Monday by President Roosevelt. Known as one of the outstanding officers in the Army Engineer Corps, Col. Somervell now assumes duty in command of the new district created at Ocala, Fla, in conjunction with creation of the canal that will shorten the distance of navigation between the Atlantic and the Gulf. Started at the instance of President Roosevelt, and with the aid of Public Works Admin- istration funds, the new ship canal is calculated to save life and property, taking ocean-going vessels away from the hurricane zone in the vicinity of Cuba. A record of high accomplishment stands behind Col. Somervell, who is only 43. For the past several months in Washington he has been on special duty with the National Emergency Oouncil. Prior to that, he was as- signed to the rivers and harbors sec- tion of the office of Maj. Gen. Edward M. Markham, chief of Engineers. Aided Turkish Government. Prior to his last detail in Washing- ton, Col. Somervell for about a year was on duty with the Turkish gov- | ernment, making an economic study of that nation for Mustapha Kemal Pasha. ‘While the District Engineer here, Col. Somervell, then a major, per- formed outstanding service in con- junction with the construction of Washington’s new water supply sys- tem. He supervised in large part the building of the new conduits from Great Falls and the filtration plant at Dalecarlia. By the Associated Press MIAMI, Fla., September 7.—A blunt threat to use National Guards- men in preventing shipment of im- mature citrus fruits from Florida “if the commissioner of argriculture does not see fit to enforce the inspection | law” was made here today by Gov.| Dave Sholtz. It followed reports that consider- | able fruit was blown from trees when | this week’s tropical hurricane swept | up the West Coast. i Reiterating his previous statement that shipment of green or unfit fruit ‘would not be allowed, Sholtz said: “The commissioner of agriculture | has ample authority to prevent such | shipment. If he does not do so, I shall. If it becomes necessary I'll | call out the National Guard.” | Sholtz saié he had notified com- mon carriers that State law prohibits | them accepting citrus shipments | which do not contain inspection ap- proval. State highway patrolmen, he added, will be directed t. prevent shipments moving out of the State by trucks. — Biblical Drama Planned. The Navy Department announced yesterday that Secretary Swanson has ordered a Medical Corps board con- vened here on Sepember 16 to select a number of naval medical officers for promotion. Heading the board will be Rear LIEUT. COL. SOMERVELL. carried on under his direction. The development of Anacostia Park also was another major job on which he was engaged. He made a special study of the im- provement of the Washington Chan- nel water front and other work for the betterment of the city. ‘Won Decorations for Service. During the World War Col. Somer- vell was with the railway engineers and engaged in other construction in France. For a time he served as as- sistant chief of staff of the 89th Di- vision. His World War service brought him the Distinguished Service Cross and the Distinguished Service Medal. During his term as District engi- neer here, he contended that Great Falls could be developed as a park and at the same time hydroelectric operations could be carried forward there. He considered some of the low-lying places around the river a menace to health, as he said they bred mosquitoes by the thousand. His position was that by flooding these areas, they would be made more attractive and useful. With Lieut. Col. U. S. Grant, 3d, then director of Public Buildings and Public Parks, he had a controversy on the availe ability of Great Falls for power de- velopment. Col. Grant contended that the beauties of Great Falls should be preserved for a park and now it is slated to be included in the George Washington Memorial Parkway. Col. Somervell was mentioned for the post of Engineer Commissioner of the District prior to the appointe ment of Col. Daniel I. Sultan. He made his home at 1810 Twenty-fourth street.
