DAILY SHORT STORY- MOON MAGIC By Tony Beacan. €¢ JEFFREY, there she is now! Look! She's going Jeffrey Lans- downe had heard Tubby Whitfield wax enthusiastic on the subject of women before, so he turned disinter- estedly for a glance at Tubby’s round, pink face before ne allowed his eyes to follow the y'S pointing finger across the sun- eplashed pool to the diving tower. Poised on the edge of the top- most springboard was a girl—a slim, lissome creature in She looked at an emerald-green bathing suit. As l.nnsdawne looked, she left the board lightly, to float like an arrow of vivid green and velvety whiteness into the water. Lansdowne watched without breath- ing until the girl reappeared on the the surface of the water and struck out with long, graceful strokes for the opposite side of the pool. “Gosh——" Tubby's rendered him inarticlate. * % ¥ % enthusiasm | “Gash—" ANSDOWNE'S eyes followed the | slim figure until she disappeared 1n the crowd on the opposite edge. Boy!” Tubby's voice held the quality of awe that comes to one who has been privileged to look upca a goddess. “Isn’t she a wow?” “Who is she?” Lansdowne asked. ‘The expression of ineffable sadness | that rested upon the boy's cherubic countenance deepened. “Her name,” he grinned sheepisn- 1y, “is Jean Lanton—and she seems to be pretty well satisfied with it.” “Jean Lanton,” Lansdowne repeat- ed softly. “That’s a pretty name, Tubby. Tell me, have all the young fellows around her had the same luck —with Miss Lanton?” “Yes,” Tubby admitted, grateful for the company that misery loves, “she can't see any of 'em with a telescope Lansdowne was silent for a mement. “How long has she been here, ‘Tubby?"” “About eight weeks. Funny you haven't met her.” “Oh, I don't know—I've been hers only about a week, and most of that time I've spent in the mountains.” “Yeah,” Tubby agreed readily. “You're such a bug on climbing moun- tains and poking into out-of-the-way places—" The boy broke off suddenly and let his eyes run over the bronzed features of the older man, saw the firm jaw, the clear gray eyes, the lithe, athletic build. “Say!” he cried, “why don't you try to catch her yourself?” “I think,” Lansdowne said slowly, “that I shall do just that——" Tubby, watching, was amazed to see the odd light that flamed in the other’s eyes. “Damn!” he muttered to himself, “That suggestion of mine wasn't so hot at that!” * ok X X ’I‘HE bronzed young man lifted his foot off the accelerator and slowed the sleek, glistening blue sport road- ster to a stop with the foot brake; then |A pulling on the emergency, ne turned to the girl by his side. The girl who had dived from the topmost spring- board into the sun- splashed pool that afternoon looked very different now. ‘The soft radiance of a full moon that was rolling the saw-tooth mountains like a great silver coin was partly respon- sible, of course, To Jeffrey Lans- downe she was the most desirable per- son in the world. Her slim, rounded body, which had made a work of art of a knitted green swimming suit that afternoon, was encased now in a gown of filmy green silk that clung revealingly. Because he could not trust himself in that moment to speak the message that pounded in his veins and throbbed in his temples, Lansdowne pointed out over the valley where the moonlight was playing magic with the low-lying mists. him quickly. “I love it,” she replied in her odd | throaty voice, the kind of voice one would expect her to have. “It is beautiful,” he said, “but not half as beautiful as you are. You're gorgeous tonight, Jean.” * X X x STRANGE little smile was tug- ging at the girl's mouth. The curve of her throat in the moonlight, the whitness of her skin, that re- minded him of the satiny petals of 2 rhododendron blossom, intensified his hunger for her. “I love you, Jean,” he said quietly, and knew that she was trembling. He wondered how many men had told her that, wondered vaguely with a savage, unreasoning resentment. “You've heard that before, of course,” he sald. “Do you ever grow tired of hearing it?” “What woman would?” she coun- tered, turning her full face to him. “How many stop with saying—just that?” She looked at him quickly. “Jean! Jean!” he cried, “why can't we—you and I—" She stopped him with a gesture. “I know,” she said wearily, “just you and I—a man—a woman—away from the world, that's it, isn't it?” “Jean!” “Wait—let me finish! —that—one-man game—" He would have protested, but she swept on, eyes blazing, her firm young body tense. “—I couldnt stand living with one | man. I wanted to try—other men—" “Jean, don't!” “For a year I tried going with many men, but I failed to find happiness that I sought. I—I didn't find any whom I wanted to—to even touch me. Now I am through!” “Jean, you mean- e “Yes” she said happily. “I'm through—TI didn’t know what I want- ed, but I know that I was like » child crying for the moon. Take me back, JefIrey—take me back. I want to be your wife again. I am still your wife, Jeffrey. I've never, never been any. thing else!” (Copyright 1935.) Bedtime Stories Chatterer’s Choice. BY THORNTON W. BURGESS. OWN the Crooked Little Path through the Green Forest ambled Jimmy Skunk. Jimmy knew nothing about the argu- ment that had been going on as to‘ who was the most independent person in the Green Forest or on the Green Meadows. Watching him from be-: neath some low-growing hemlock branches were Peter Rabbit and Jumper the Hare, while from higher up in the tree Chatterer the Red Bquirrel was looking down at him. Jimmy was unaware of the three pairs ; of eyes watching him. It would have made no difference to him had he | been aware of them. He was minding his own business and had no interest in anything else. He passed along down the Crooked Little Path, passed where the others were watching. “There,” said Chat- terer, “is the most independent per- son in all the Green Forest, or in all the Great World, for that matter, I believe.” “He is independent,” admitted Jumper the Hare, “but I don’t agree that he is the most independent per- son. No, sir, I don't agree to that. I still think Prickly Porky is the most independent.” ‘Pooh!” retorted Chatterer. “Prickly Porky is independent up to a certain point. I admit that. Of course, I admit that. The thousand little spears hidden in his coat and car- ried on his tail make him respected by almost every one. If that isn't independence, I don’t know what is. But Prickly Porky is afraid of Pekan the Fisher, and he has good reason to be. Furthermore, I've seen him hustle out of the way of Buster Bear when Buster Bear was very hungry.” “That doesn't mean anything,” re- plied Jumper. “Any one with any sense at all would get out of the way of Buster Bear.” “Jimmy Skunk wouldn't,” retorted Chatterer. “Don’t be silly; of course, he would get out of Bmur Bear's way,” snapped Jumper. Chatterer shook hh head violently. “You don't know what you are talk- ing about,” he sputtered. “Jimmy Skunk wouldn't get out of anybody's way, if he didn’t feel like it. No, sir; Jimmy wouldn’t get out of anybody’s | one bit faster. way. If Buster Bear should come ’ along he would be the one that would get out of Jimmy’s way. I know it, because I've seen it happen. I admit that it doesn’t sound reasonable vhen you consider the difference in size between the two, but it is so, nevertheless. If a man should come along where Buster Bear is, Buster would get out of there is a hurry, but if a man should come along here now Jimmy Skunk wouldn't move Indeed, I doubt if he would go at all. It would be just like him to try to drive the man away. That is my idea of independ- ence.” “Hello!” exclaimed Peter Rabbit. Prickly Porky is coming down out of his tree. I wish he and Jimmy Skunk would meet. That would soon settle the question between those two. How- ever, I still think that Buster Bear is the most independent person in the Green Forest.” “Speaking of Buster Bear, here he comes back now!” exclaimed Jumper the Hare, Chatterer chuckled. “I wish all three would meet,” said he. “Wouldn't it be fun?” Slowly Prickly Porky backed down the tree. Slowly Jimmy Skunk ambled along the Crooked Little Path. Slow- ly great big Buster Bear came shuf- fling along from among the trees. It began to look very much as if the three would meet at a certain point in the Crooked Little Path. Peter Rab- bit sat up in big-eyed wonder and ex- citement. Jumper the Hare sat up with very much the same expression. Chatterer the Red Squirrel, looking down from up in the tree, chuckled gleefully as he watched the three drawing nearer and ,nearer to each other. (Copyright, 1935.) The Romance of Your Name. BY RUBY HASKINS ELLIS, Tms surname is derived from the words “orme,” meaning elm, and “by,” meaning town—the original significance being “village in the elms.” There remains a village called Ormsby in the North Riding of York- shire, a relic of the ancient use as & place name. The Ormsby family claims Norman descent, and it is found that when William the Con- queror invaded England there was then living in Lincolnshire a family of Ormsbys headed by Sir Richard de Ormsby, who, with others of his fam- ily, became a follower of the Con- queror. Richard was rewarded by William the Norman by grants of lands and manor houses in Lincoln- shire, and the chief bestowed upon him a coat of arms. Sir Oswald de Ormsby, the eldest son of Richard, became head of the family and founded the priory of Ormesby dur- ing the reign of Henry II. The name is now found in many sections of the country. The Ormsby family held many | manors during the centuries follow- ing the conquest of England by the Normans, and various members of the family have contributed materially to English history. Ormsbys were also seated in Ireland for several centuries. In Great Britain the name is usually spelled Ormesby, but in America it has been spelled Ormsby, Armsby, Amesby, Armesbury. Richard Orms- by was the founder of the family in America. Little is known of his im- mediate antecedents in England. He | was in Saco, Me,, a “planter,” in 1641. He later moved to Salisbury, Mass., and in 1649 was admitted a freeman of Haverhill He was in Rehoboth, Mass., in 1663. There are a great many descendants of this first settler living in various sections of the United States. (Copyright. 1935.) Nature’s Children BY LILLIAN COX ATHEY. F YOU would like to have rhinoc- ! eros iguanas for pets, a married couple may be purchased in the United States for as low as $50. They are found only in Haiti and After becoming accli- mated, homesickness overcome, and | faith established in their keeper, tne iguanas decide to make the best of | it and really become very docile. The method of hunting these crea- | tures is to use dogs trained for the | ne, purpose. Being chased by biting, bark- | ing, yapping dogs—creatures entirely town”—is not likely to make the pur- sued reptile feel calm and serene. By the time the captured iguanas reacn | the States they are naturally a bit peevish. Those who must transfer the vicious beasts from one inclosure to another | creep up behind them and, with a quick movement, catch the iguana by the back of the neck with one hand. The animal is usually at such a time standing on its hind legs, lashing its tail furiously. With the other hand the animal's hind legs are pressed firmly to the ground. The subdued beast is thus tightly held while he 1s transferred to another cage, or to his cage home. In this position the lizard cannot turn and bite, nor can i¢ use its claws. One blow from them can give a very painful wound. They are very fond of young chick- ens. They rush toward one and, with a few swift and terribly strong shakes, the fowl is dead. A larger animal is killed by shaking, then torn to bits. The pleces are scattered about the cage as the iguana tears the animal apart. Each piece is rushed as if 1t were alive and resisting. Small rats are swallowed whole, large ones torn to bits. Animals fully clothed mn tur or feathers are preferred. The diet is varied or combined with bananas, berries, lettuce, clover, celery and tlowers. As the iguanas grow older their livery is a dark brown. With their three blunt conical horns situing on their snouts, the larger one 1ully three-eights of an inch high, and the crest of lanceolate spines along the back, they certainly present a gro- tesque appearance. ‘The head is massive, with large swollen knobs on the crown and even larger ones at the jaws. The hang- ing throat pouch gives the patnarcn an expression of high living. ‘I'ne folds of thick, vein-like skin on the neck and shoulders add to the im- pression, The favorite attitude is squatting low on the ground upon the mnd quarters, with the body reared hign in a belligerent manner, upheld by the sturdy front legs. In this posi- tion the rhinoceros iguana, or lizard, remains sphinx-like, as it carved trom stone. (Copyright, 1¥35.) Wxt thty Thedrlr.h\lmnylt.heluweuol been sold.
