Will Rogers and Wiley Post, Uncle Sam was starting erection of “keep off” signs for civillan aviation on the Aleutian Islands. President Roosevelt's order. convert- ing a portion of the vast 1,500 volcanic crescent into a military and naval reservation, emphasizes defensive im- portance of the area. The region is described by the National Geographic Society as a “necklace beaded with volcanic peaks looped across the throat of the Bering Sea,” south and west of Alaska. | Despite a climate nearly always like a disagreeable March—almost per- petual fog, and rain falling on the average of 250 days in the year—the | isiands afford many possible landing | places for pontoon-equipped planes. It would be difficult, however, to set down a land plane, due to the rugged terrain. The best harbor in the whole chain, Geographic Soclety officials say, is Dutch Harbor, Unalaska. Deep, land- locked, it is one of the finest in the North and was a big transport factor in the old Yukon and Nome gold | rushes. Today, despite the fact liners | do not stop there, it could accommo- | flying there and a submarine detach- ment making a careful survey of the surrounding waters. Thus, War and Navy Departments are believed to have complete kndwledge of the whole lonely region. The story of the chain is a dra- matic one. In defiance of the regular order of things, scientists say islands in the group have been known to appear above the sea one year and disappear the next; and one great peak literally “blew its head off” in 1912 in a famous explosion. Discovered in the middle of the eighteenth century by Russian ex- plorers, the islands—and there are thousands of them in a sort of pan- handle jutting out from Alaska—had a population of some 25,000 who lived like Eskimos but looked like Asiatics. Mainland hordes, however, so deci- mated the Aleuts that when the is- lands were transferred by Russia to the United States in 1867 only about 1,000 of them were left. Now, the handful of people make a living chiefly by fox farming, keep. ing the animals in pens much as hogs. CapPiTal's RADIO PROGRAMS Tueeday, August 27.
