TA—16 #P FINANCIAL. THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C., TUESDAY, AUGUST '27, 1935. FINANCIAL, |BAI[]|]RAW TRANSACTIONS ON THE NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANG E{CKS ARE WEAK - By private wire direct to The Stan - BIG ATTENDANCE Annual Session at White | Sulphur Springs to Be | Held in October. BY EDWARD C. STONE. Washington members of the Invest- ment Bankers' Association said today that the annual convention at White Sulphur Springs in October will have a larger atendance than the 1934 ses- sion at the same West Virginia resort and is likely to be the largest since ghe 1929 Wall Street crash. Advance information about the pro- gram indicates that less stress will be placed on forums this year and more eddresses by noted speakers will be gncluded in the general sessions. With corporate Jfinancing on the increase, many bond experts believe that this year's program will be of more value than the one carried out a vear ago, when 500 members and guests were present, or 48 per cent of the member- ship With the securities act now in more workable form that piece of legisla- tion will take secandary vlace as a topic of discuss dealers say. They emphasize, however, that the act re- mains highly important as a factor in all underwriting and distribution of securities, and because of this more than casual attention will be paid to its manner of operation. The matter of railroad credit, thor- bughly discussed at last year's meet- §ng, will again be considered. Al- though investmer®t bankers view some of the fundamental problems bulking §n the railroad picture as unchanged from a Yyear ago, considerable im- provement has been shown in many vespects and talk of a railroad bond #ssue is something within the bounds of reason. Public utilities and the outlook for public utility financing @re two subjects certain to be dealt with extensively at one or more ses- SloLs. Steps being taken to correct for- eign bond defaults will likewise be viewed. Government expenditures in the United States and their conse- quent effect on outstanding bonds of warious Government units probably will also be a live topic of discus slon. Attorney Paul V. Keyser of this ity is general counsel for the as- gociation, having held this positipn ‘for years. be Orrin G. Wood, succeeding Ralph . Crane. ‘: B. & O. July Net Lower. The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad re- ported today that net railway operat- ing income in July totaled $1.276,784, in comparison with $2,166.003 in the corresponding period last year, a de- grease of $898,219. Both freight and passenger revenues were lower, the detailed repart showed. Railway operating revenues amounted to $10,772,712, against $11,654,709 last year in July, 1934. Operating expenses were held down #o a figure only slightly higher than a gear ago, standing at $8,507,281, as rompared with $8,497,762, a difference pf $9,518. Usual deductions from net revenues were $6,703 more than a year 8g0. Net railway operating income for the first seven months of 1935 was mlso reported, $12,524,382 comparing fwith $13,741,861 in the same period ast year, a decrease of $1,217479. his was largely accounted for by a falling off in freight revenues. The B. & O. took in %69,003.070 for freight Bervice, against $70,376,127 last year, p drop of $1,373,057. Insurance: Agents Honored. Orders placed by Fetailers with wholesale firms and gnanu(actufln houses are the heaviest n recent yei The business stimu- Jation is largely credited to increased Andustrial pay rolls, added income for Farmers and heavy Government ex- Jpenditures. Cigarette production in Vir- ginia and North Carolina is setting new monthly records, the Richmond bank says. May Retain Pension Plans. 1t was reported in the financial dis- trict today that some of the banks which operate pension plans of their own are expecting to keep them in operation after new social security Jaw goes into effect. The banks, of course, will comply with the new law gnd make the payments and collec- tions required of all employers of eight persons or more. Continuance by individual banks of pensions which they have carried for several years would mean a great deal to those employes who have already rendered Jong and faithful service. It 1s too soon, however, to say just what will be done. Marion M. Caskie was sworn in sterday in his new position as an terstate Commerce commissioner. Today's Trading on Exchange. NEW YORK, August 27.—Prices of leading stocks toppled today under a deluge of selling orders that put the ticker tape several minutes behind. Losses ranged from fractions to around 3 points. The downturn was attributed largely to profit taking. induced by technical factors. The close was weak. Transfers approxi- mated 2,300,000 shares. Brokers claimed to be little sur- prised at the reversal, in view of the fact that the list had been advancing for a relatively long time with only minor corrections. A steady to firm undertone was present in the early proceedings, but sagging utilities soon brought unsettlement. A number of issues received support in the last half hour and shaded their declines. Although the adjournment of Con- gress created little stir, marketwise, some traders were said to have un- loaded their holdings because of con- fusion as to the effects of the flood of legislation rushed through near the finish. Trade and industry were still being watched closely, as was the Italo-Ethiopian controversy. Wheat and corn were not excep- tionally heavy, in view of the action of equities. Cotton was a bit better than steady pending further clarifi- cation of the 10-cent loan agree- ment. Bonds pointed downward, led by U. S. Governments. Foreign ex- changes were calm. » Among the more active share losers were American Can, American Tele. phone, U. S. Steel, Allied Chemical, Bethlehem, General Motors, Chrysler, Auburn, Kennecott, Anaconda, Mont- gomery Ward, Sears-Roebuck; Case Johns-Manville, Consolidated Gas, North American, Western Union, Westinghouse, American Water Works, Columbia Gas, Santa Fe, New York Central, Delaware & Hudson 4 and Great Northern. Resistance was shown by Du Pont and a few others. ks, . - New York Cotton By the Associated Press.
