The trim rifle squad stood rigidly at attention as the flag-draped casket of the 89-year-old financier was lowered into a grave near that-of his long-time friend, Dr. Harvey W. Wiley. Then, at a sotto voice command of their leader, the cavalrymen stepped back from the crowd of mourners several paces, raised their rifles and fired their resounding sa- lute to an erstwhile comrade in arms. ‘The rifles were lowered, and as the smoke curled upward through the tall oak trees, the bugler stepped to the grave and sent the plaintive notes of the “soldiers’ farewell” vibrating over the cemetery. Rev. Paul Sperry, who had paid high tribute to Mr. Edson at funeral services in the Swedenborgian Church of the Holy City earlier, recited & Scripture comforting to the bereaved family and friends just before the soldiers paid their homage in the tra- dition of military funerals. The services at the church were conducted with marked simplicity, in harmony with Mr. Edson’s mode of living. Representatives of many or- ganizations with which Mr. Edson was affiliated attended. The District Commissiongrs and a group of promi- nent private citizens were honorary pallbearers. The minister spoke feelingly of Mr. Edson’s long service to ‘the com- munity and the Nation—of his patri- otic ideals, his charities and his civic | leadership. Trafc was blocked over nearby | driveways as the funeral in the ceme- | tery was in progress. Scores of men, | women and children stood near al the ceremonies at the grave. A. B.
