A—12 : DILLINGER'S THRILL FROM CRIME TOLD Woman in Red Interviewed for First Time Since His Slaying. (Copyright. 1935, by the -asociated Pressy CHICAGO, July 19.—John Dillinger, the desperado whose death at the hands of Federal agents fast July 22| ended the world’s most famous man hunt, was described today by “the woman in red” as a criminal who de- lighted in reading newspaper accounts of his crimes. Mrs, Anna Sage, popularly supposed to have put Dillinger on the spot for the “G” men, sald she knew Dillinger as Jimmie Lawrence. “Jimmie would sit down and for hours he would avidly read the de- tails of Dillinger’s crimes.” said the comely red-haired Rumanian. Thought Himself Smart. “‘Jimmy’ said he thought Dillinger must have been very clever. He said Dillinger was too smart for the cops.” Mrs. Sage, who has denied that she put Dillinger on the spot for Depart- ment of Justice agents, recalled a con- versation with the gangster in June, 1934, on the same day that a South| Bend, Ind., bank was held up and one man killed and three others wounded. Dillinger has since been named by po- lice as the man who led the bandits. “That same night,” she said, “ ‘Jim- | mie' was reading newspaper accounts of the hold-up. “I said, ‘That's a horrible thing. | The men who did that should be cap- tured and hung.’ “Jimmy sat kind of thoughtful for | & moment, and then said, ‘Yeah. I' guess you're right. That's pretty lousy, isn’t it.’” Leads Prosaic Life. As proof that she was not aware of *Jimmie’s” real identity, she said: “‘Jimmie’ and Polly Hamilton used to take Stevie (her 23-year-old son) and his girl to night clubs and amuse- ment parks almost every hight. No mother will ever believe that I would have allowed my son to accompany ‘Jimmie’ if I knew he was John Dil- | linger.” Although rumor had her fleeing from the United States in fear of gangland vengeance, Mrs. Sage de- clared that she had never left Chi- cago. She was found living a prosaic life within a few blocks of the spot where Dillinger made his last stand and lost.
