NEW YORK, July 19.—Contra-sea- sonal gains in industrial operations featured the trade situation during the past week, Dun & Bradstreet reported today in its weekly sumiaary of business conditions. “The Midsummer season has start- ed” it said, “with the expected re- oession yet t# develop to its usual degree of intensity. In fact, the rebound of industrial operations, which was contrary to all normal trends, easily took precedence over all other occurrences of the week, particularly because of the broadness of the increase when set alongside the comparative showing of a year 280, “Retail distribution continued to widen, with the heat wave accel- erating previous gains, while the more rapid pace of wholesale buying re- flected dwindling stocks and the im- proved outlook for Fall. ° “Deriving benefit from the hot spell and the largest tourist trafic since 1930, retail trade in most paris of the country exceeded all comparative totals for a number of years. “Stocks of Summer goods already have been reduced to a minimum for this period, even thbugh many merchants are not holding special July clearances this year. “The volume of retail sales in most districts achieved stronger advantage in the comparison with 1934, the estimated increase for the country ranging from 13 to 30 per cent. “In a number of divisions the rate of gain in wholesale buying ran to | & larger percentage than at retail, the brisk flow from fill-in orders indi- cating that many merchants had un- | derestimated consumer requirements.
