Lynchburg Bonds Taken Here. Yesterday the local investment firm | of Brown, Goodwyn & Co. was a| member of the syndicate headed by | the Chase National Bank of New York, which was successful in buying $235,000 City of Lynchburg, Va. 1’z per cent bonds maturing from six months to five years. The bonds were | immediately reoffered at prices to | vield from ; per cent to 13 per cent, and it is understood that they were immediately sold. The total amount of this issue was $500,000 and the city awarded the bonds in two separate lots. The syndi- cate in which Brown, Goodwyn & Co. participated obtained $235,000 of the bonds as 1l,s at 100.027. Another group bought $265,000 of the bonds due from 1941 to 1945 at 100925 as 2s. The interest cost to the city for the $500,00¢ is 1.775 per cent, which is | probably the lowest rate of interest at which money has ever been bor- rowed for this length of time by any Virginia municipality. The credit of the City of Lynchburg is considered unusually strong and the price at which its bonds sold is clear evidence | of this fact. American Stores Sales Gain. Sales of the American Stores Co. for the four weeks ended June 29 totaled $9,072,179, against $8,848,731 in the compnratlvexpertod a year ago, an increase of $223,448, or 2.5 per cent. The company also reported sales for the first six months of this year as compared with the first half of 1934, $58,776,360 against $58,003,548, an in- crease of $772,812, or 3 per cent. Sales for the five weeks ended June 1 showed an increase of 1 per cent as | compared with the corresponding pe- | riod in the previous year. The revort | is in line with other recent chain store returns. Bond Issue Oversubscribed. The Richmond Reserve Bank today notified banks that the offering of $100,000,000 27% bonds brought out tenders for $510,958.000 | face amount of the bonds, $101,967 000 being accepted. The yield is ahout 277 per cent to the first call Aate, March 15, 1955. and about 2.78 ver cent to maturity, March 15, 1960.
