CHICAGO, July 11.—Amos Alonzo Stagg thinks the outcry over com- munism at the University of Chicago is a “lot of bunk.” The “grand old man of the mid- way,” coach of University of Chicago foot ball teams 41 years until he left in 1933 to become coach at College of the Pacific, Stockton, Calif., took up the cudgel for his friends of many years as he said: “Why I know these men and Iknow the sort of things they teach. If any professor tried to use his position to advocate theories of government op- posed to our Government, that would be wrong. To keep students informed, though, as to different theories of government is proper education.” Stagg was asked his opinion of the advocacy of legalized gambling by his friend and former faculty-mate, Prof. Ernest Burgess of the soclology de- partment, University of Chicago. “I don’t know anything about gam- bling.” he said. “I never gambled on anything in my life. And I hadn't heard about Burgess’ suggestion. So I'm not qualified to express an opin- ion.” And with that “the grand old man,” who had just come from a’ tennis game with his son Paul, dismissed controversial subjects to reflect how he could improve his backhand so he could be in better shape by his 73d birthday, August 16. “SANE TAXATION” PLAN IS URGED BY SIBLEY C. of C. Head Has No Criticism for Roosevelt Motives, but Disagrees on Methods. By the Associated Press. CHAMPAIGN, 111, July 11.—Harper Sibley. president of "he United States Chamber of Commerce, was on record yesterday as having no criticism for the motives of his friend and former schoolmate, President Roosevelt, but disagreeing with him on how fast na- tional recovery should be attempted. Addressing a meeting of the Ameri- can Society of Farm Managers and the Illinois Association of Farm Man- agers last night, Sibley asserted: “If the administration would stop & while and try to administer laws that are on the books, it would be a great comfort to all of us.” He urged that Government be car- ried on by “sane taxation,” with the suggestion that “if necessary, Con- gress should go home long enough to permit a sound and ihorough study of this taxation scheme." “None of us has any criticism of the President’s motives,” Sibley said, “but it is simpi, impossible to rebuild the country and maxge it a better place in which to live all at once.” ' Includes Only 80 Nevada Couples Stricter Laws of Other States Make Legal Mills Grind. By the Associated Press. RENO, Nevada, July 11.—Nevada's famed divorce mills grind swiftly and steadily, but Nevadans contribute little of the grist. In Reno, for example, where 1286 marriages were ended in the first six months of 1935, only about 80 of the couples involved were married in | Nevada. Moreover, a considerable | number of the 80 actually were resi- dents or California or other States. Nevadans probably are as susceptible to divorce as residents of any other State, but if it were not for the stricter laws of such States as New York, California and New Jersey, many of Reno's attorneys would find it difficult to earn a living at the bar. With six months of the year gone North Dakota alone among the States has not yet been represented in 1935 divorce liats.
