By the Assoclated Press. NEW YORK, July 11.—Because of the short week, due to the Independ- ence day holiday. bank clearings were reduced, in ccmparison with the full week last year. The total for the 22 leading cities in the United States covering five business days ended Wednesday, July 10, as reported by Dun & Bradstreet, Inc., was $4,327,- 604,000 For the six days last year, clearings amounted to $4,709,621,000, making the reduction 8.1 per cent. In the preceding week this year, when con- ditions were reversed; there was a gain of 50.9 per cent. For the last| two weeks, with the difference en- tirely eliminated, the increase in clear- ings this year was 20.5 per cent, a| substantially higher amount than has previously been reported. At New York City, clearings for the | five days were $2,843,856,000, that| amount being less by 82 per cent| than the amount reported for six days | a year ago, while the aggregate for centers outside of New York of $1,-| 483,748,000 revealed a decline of 7.9 per cent in the same comparison. At a numker of cities, particularly in the West and South, clearings for the five days this year exceeded the} amount reported for the six days a| year ago. Also. clearings for the five | days this week were less than the | total for the six days of the preceding | week by $2 48 ,000. When con- ditions were reversed a year ago there was an increase of $194,029.000 for | the six days, compared with five d.'ns‘ covered by the report of a week ear1~ ier. Daily bank cleatings for the first | 10 days of July this year were higher than those for any month during me past three years. By the Assoclated Press. NEW YORK, July 11.—Copper pro- ducers are looking for a substantial upturn in demand in connection with the requirements of large users of the red metal, circles today. Confidence that such a buying movement is imminent was stimulated by the reported purchase of 10,000,000 pounds of copper by General Motors Corp. As the transaction was reported to the trade, the automobile concern con- cluded its purchase with the Inter- national Minerals & Metal Corp. on the basis of 734 cents a pound, or !4 SUIT Worsteds--Serges it was said in producing | cent below the current quotation of primary producers.
