SENATOR NORRS MARKS BRTHDAY Nebraskan Is 74 Today. Sees Taxes and Holding Companies Big Issues. By the Associated Press. Senator George W. Norris cele- brated his 74th birthday anniversary today by talking about the “better democracy” he is confident the fu- ture will bring. The Republican independent from Nebraska—fourth oldest man in the Senate—in- dulged in a few r e m iniscences, but mostly his words were of the present and the years ahead. “Right now,” he said, “the two great issues be- fore the country are holding company legislation and taxing great wealth. “We never can have a real democ- racy and a real civilization as long a5 the holding companies dominate, not only in the electric field but in every other. Likewise, we can’t have | permanent prosperity unless we tax | huge inheritances.” So Right It Must Win. Norris, who conducted many a fight | for an apparently hopeless cause be- fore victories began to come his way in the last few years, added: “This holding company fight we are in now wouldn’t have been pos- Senator Nerrls, Here sible 10 years ago. If we lose now, we'll win later. It's something so ab- solutely right that it must win, and one of the big helps is that we have President Roosevelt.” After fighting for & long time, Nor- ris in recent years has seen his plan for public. development of Muscle Shoals started under the Tennessee Valley Authority, his constitutional amendment to abolish lame duck Congresses adopted, passage of his bill to ban the use of infunctions in labor disputes and adoption by his home State of a small, one-House Legislature, Still Speaks of War Vote. One of the few past events he still speaks of with deep feeling is the vote he cast against American entry into the World War. “My vote didn't accomplish any- thing,” he said, “but if war had been defeated by my vote it would have been a wonderful accomplishment. The evil of that war is still with us. One hundred years from now we'll still be paying the penalty.” Despite his years Norris still can read without glasses. He walks to the Capitol instead of riding. When the Senate recently stayed in session all night because of Senator Long's filibuster, Norris stayed through un- til the gavel fell at 6 am., and was on the job in his office at 9 a.m. —_— 110-DEGREE FEVER Texas Heat Victim Records That, Is Expected to Live. DALLAS, Tex., July 11 (#)—Carl Wilson, 18, of near Van Alystine, Tex., was taken unconsciols from a wheat field yesterday, overcome by heat, but remained alive after a physician’s thermometer, placed in his mouth, shot to 110 degrees.
