Cc—4 SPORTS. Bill Moore, New Horseshoe Sensation, Invited to Have It MATCH PLANNED | WITH BOB HENSON Jarrell Blanks Saunders, Will Battle Again in Brentwood Show. ILL MOORE, Washington's latest ringer-throwing sensa- tion, will have his mettle tested by the toughest oppo- sition to be found in this section of the land if he and Clayton Henson accept an invitation extended today by Mayor W. N. Mahaffey of Brent- wood. It is Mayor Mahaffey’s plan to stage & special match between Henson and Moore as an anti-climax of the Mary- land State championship to be held next Monday and Tuesday on the town courts at Brentwood. This will open The Star’s seventh annual tour- nament. The battle between Henson and Moore would be a feature of a lawn fete to be held next week to raise money for Brentwood's recreation park. A fully equipped playground for the Brentwood kiddies long has been Mayor Mahaffey’s dream and after next week he hopes to have the youngsters see-sawing, swinging, shooting the chute and having one grand old time—and have them off the streets. HE recreation park will be for g grown-ups as well. Several years ago, as town councilman, Mahafley got the park project under way by clearing some land and installing first-class horseshoe courts. Here for | three years has been held the Mary- land section of The Star’s tourna- iment. Henson and Moore are far out front in ringer percentages in the Metropolitan Singles League, with lit- | tle to choose between them. They have been beating 60 per cent con- sistently and shooting an occasional game of well above 70. Co-starring with Henson and Moore next Wednesday, if they accept the engagement, will be Harry Saunders, | District champion, and Temple Jarrell | of Maryland, District intercollegiate titleholder. | Saunders took an upset beating from | Jarrell last night in the Metropolitan | League and a victory over the tall| Marylander, even if only in an exhibi- | tion, would be satisfying. ‘JARRELL was the first to beat Saun- ders in the league, winning all three games. In each game the rah | rah champ threw 56 per cent ringers. After the first skirmish, in which he tossed 53 per cent, Saunders’ game steadily declined. It was only the second time in six years of competition | here that Saunders was whitewashed. Several years ago Hubbard Quantrille plastered the former Westminster Col- lege athlete in the District champion- ship, but Saunders later regained the title by beating Hub in a hotly con- tested final. In another league match last night, Ed Kruse won three straight from Pzt Casey. Kruse, who reached the late rounds of the Maryland tournament last year, is a greatly improved pitcher and must be reckoned with when the firing starts next Monday night at Brentwood. C, THURSDAY, JULY 11, 1935. PRRY D VIS MATEH S SOLEAT “World Title Tilt” Planned for King George’s Jubilee Trust Fund. By the Assoclated Press. ONDON, July 11.—Officials of King George's jublee trust fund have launched negotiatons for a match between Fred Perry and Ellsworth Vines for the “world’s tennis championship,” it was learned today. Vines, generally regarded as the greatest of the professionals, already has been approached to play the British ace, who is conceded to be king of the amateurs. If the lanky Californian’s decision is favorable an effort will be made to line up Perry and get approval from the British Lawn Tennis Association. The match, if negotiations are suc- cessful, would be played at Wimbledon shortly after the Davis Cup challenge round. Vines, who is playing in the pro- fessional tournament at Southport, has advised the promoters he will dis- cuss the proposal when he comes to London on Tuesday. Vines Is Willing. “I'LL be frank with you,” he told the Associated Press. “I went into| this game to make a living. But 1(! this match is for charity, I guess that's | different. I'd love to play Fred.” Neither Perry nor B. L. T. A. offi- cials have been approached yet but in view of the match's charitable and patriotic character, they probably would strain a point or two to accede. ‘The match, first of its kind in the history of the game, undoubtedly would pack Wimbledon no matter what fancy figure was asked for seats. Herbert Roper Barrett, captain of the British Davis Cup team and sec- retary of the B. L. T. A, declined to | discuss the association’s probable atti- tude until officially informed of the promoter’s plans. “I know nothing, officially, about it now,” Barrett said, “so I can't say anything. When it does come up| we’ll discuss it at a regular meeting.” | ROMAN SOLDIER TRAINS Will Run in Arlington Classic| if He Regains Form.
