A8 CHURCH TO MARK SIXTIETH YEAR Eastern Presbyterian to Open Week of Special Events Tomorrow. The sixtieth anniversary of the organization of the Eastern Presby- terian Church will be celebrated by a week of special events, beginning to- morrow at 11 a.m., when the pastor, Dr. Alfred E. Barrows, will preach. The music will We by the chorus choir, directed by Charles W. Guest, with Miss Nellle Sacrey, organist. The eve- ning service will be under the auspices of the Men's Bible Class. Carl Broo- man, former Assistant Secretary of Agriculture, will be the speaker, and the male chorus of the men’s class, directed by Enoch R. Burns, and Prof. J. Colburn Beall, pianist and organist, will have charge of the music. Monday evening will be PFraternal | evening. The address will be ‘made | by Rev. R. Paul Schearrer, moderator of the Presbytery of Washington City. Others who will extend greetings are Dr. W. L. Darby, executive secretary of the Federation of Churches; Dr. James D. Buhrer of the First Re- formed Church; Dr. H. M. Canter of the Ingram Memorial Church, Dr. James H. Taylor of the Central Pres- byterian Church and Dr. Shera Mont- gomery, chaplain of the House of Rep- resentatives. Music will be rendered by the chorus choir. Tuesday evening will be the Histor- ical evening, Charles L. Loughery pre- siding. The young men will present | & sketch, reproducing the early begin- | ning of the church. Other historical events will be reviewed and illustrated by lantern slides. The song, “Some- time We'll Understand,” which was written by Dr. Cornelius, one df the pastors of the church, will be sung. World-Wide Friendships. The world-wide friendships of East- ern Church will be expressed in letters which have been received from Dr. William Chalmers Covert, moderator of the General Assembly of the Pres- byterian Church of the United States of America; Toyohiko Kagawa of To- kio, Japan; Dr. Will Dobson, a medi- cal missionary in China, who went to the foreign field from the church; Dr. Sam Higginbottom of India, and | others. Wednesday evening, the Makers of Today and Tomorrow,” Del- bert O. Osborne will preside. The organizations of the church will show their part in the church work in origi- nal wavs. A social will be held Thursday. Horace C. Wilcox will preside. George A. Myers will be the soloist. The church was organized in 1871. ‘The Sunday school was started in the home of Mr. and Mrs. James Hughes, | 1016 H street northeast, with Fer- nando Cate as superintendent, R. H. | Leipold assistant superintendent and B. H. Warned secretary and treasurer. A chapel was built on Eighth street, between F and G streets northeast, in 1872. Joseph T. Kelly, a student from Princeton University, accepted an invitation to preach.each Sunday. He later became pastor of Fourth | Church. The church was formally or- ganized May 19, 1875, with a mem- bership of 33. William T. Betts and Edward H. Betts, charter members, are still living. The present edifice at Sixth street and Maryland avenue northeast was begun during the pas- torate of Dr. Maxwell N. Cornelius, ‘The corner stone was laid April 16, 1892.
