AMORTIZED LOAN PLANOF F.H.A.IS HELD SUCCESSFUL Insured Mortgage Applica- tions Total $3,000,000 in District. NEW RECORD IS SET DURING PAST WEEK %0 Persons Make Request for $455,600 to Build or Re- finance Mortgages. BY JAMES Y. NEWTON. The chief purpose of the national housing act—to reform the entire system of home financing along lines of amortized loans of long term— apparently is being worked out in Washington at a surprisingly rapid | rate, It was announced today that ap- plications for insured mortgages to- taling more than $3.000.000 have been received in the District «office of the Federal Housing Administration since the first of the year. In each instance the administration has carefully ex- amined the application before accept- ing it, and has at least accepted appraisal fees from all the applicants. In many instances commitments for mutual mortgage insurance have been issued. Insurance Phase Success. The flow of applications in recent weeks has been amazing. The success | of Title II, the mortgage insurance | phase of the housing act, has surpassed | the expectations of even its most en- thusiastic supporters in Washington. Hundreds of individuals have been coming in the local office, and the speculative builders and land develop- ers have been bringing in many more. H. H. Dearing, F. H. A, director in the District, announced today that a new record was set during the past week, when 70 applications for insured | mortgages were accepted by his office. | Thirty applications came in yesterday, setting another record, that for a sin- gle day's business. A total of 395 home owners and prospective home owners were interviewed in the week by Dear- ing’s office $455,600 Requested. | The 70 persons from whom applica- tions and appraisal fees were accepted | during the week requested $455,600 with which to build or to refinance their present mortgages. Dearing stated that approximately 35 per cent of the application. received so far have been for new construction. The director stated that Washington financial institutions have been offer- ing excellent co-operation in the work, and that large insurance companies are anxious to invest large sums in Washington real estate. There are ample private funds available. Dear- | ing believes, to take care of the tre- | mendous volume of applications pour- | ing in. LOW-COST HOUSING TOPIC OF SPEAKER | B. M. Petti of P. W. A.
