F. C. Loans for Illinois Central y the Assoclated Press. CHICAGO. April 18.—L. A. Downs, president of the Illinois Central sys- tem, told stockholders at their annual meeting yesterday he hoped to avoid any further borrowing from the Re- construction ~inance Corp. this year. He presented a resolutoin of the directors asking authority to merge 13 subsidiary companies north of the Ohio River with the parent organ- ization and to issue a new mortgage which would cover the consolidated properties. This proposal was ratified. Downs explained the proposed merger would be executed by convert- ing the properties of the subsidiaries, which now are unmortgaged, to the parent company by deed. “This action will enable the issuance of a new mortgage to refund the eixst- ing mortgage indebtedness and to provide a cushion of securities which later can be sold or pledged as col- lateral,” Downs said. Gross revenues of the Illinois Cen- tral for the first three months of 1935 gained 6.8 per cent over the first quarter of 1934, Downs said, but in- creased expenses offset this. As a| result, there was a loss of approxi- | mately $1471,000 after all charges, | compared with a deficit of $684,000 in the same 1934 period. The road has borrowed $62,000,000 since the start of 1930, but has retired | $57,000,000 of the obligation, he re- ported. CLEARINGS STAY BELOW YEAR AG0 Register Further Decrease Compared With Large Total in 1934, By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, April 18 —Bank clear~ ings are again irregular and show & further loss compared with the heavy amount reported a year ago. The total for the 22 leading cities in the United States for the week ended ‘Wednesday, April 17, as reported by Dun & Bradstreet, Inc., was $5,321,- 203,000, against $6,021,939,000 for the same week of last year, a loss of 11.6 per cent, This contrasted with a loss of 9.3 per cent in the previous week. At New York City, clearings were $3,535,- 396,000, a reduction of 17.7 per cent from the amount reported last year, while the aggregate for centers out- side of New York of $1,785,807,000 was only 3.5 per cent higher. The reduction the last week was again mainly at New York City, al- though clearings were smaller at Bos- ton and Philadelphia and some other key centers, while at Chicago there was only a very trifling gain. The increase also was considerably re- duced from that reported for the past year 2t other points. Consideration should be given tc FYEAR PEAK SET | BY AUTO OUTPUT = Executives Weigh Possibil- ity of 1935 Total Near 4,000,000 Mark. | By the Associated Press. DETROIT, April 18.—Production activity in the automobile industry today is at the highest level in five years, with no indication of a slow- ing down. Some executives are speculating on the possibility of an h | aggregate output close to 4,000,000 units this year, Early predictions for 1935 produc- tion placed the figures at 3,350,000 passenger cars and trucks. Apparently reluctant to be quoted as to production possibilities for the makers are confining themselves to | the general observmon that “current | business 1s good.” and that prospects | for the second quarter of the year | ‘ look “bright.” | On the basis of present production schedules and orders placed in ad- vance with parts manufacturers, the }mdustry should pass the two-million | unit production point near the end of {May. It is more or less of a tradi- | tion in the automobile industry that the great volume of outpunt is to be ex- pected in the first six months of the year, but there appears to be a general feeling among manufacturers that the | current recovery movement has facets | entirely new to manufacturing and ]merthlndlsma practices. ‘When the recovery movement began | in 1933 and even as late as the middle {of 1934 it was not difficult to find a - | few pessimists here and there in both production and distribution divisions of the automobile industry. If there jare any such in automotive trade ! scattered that their speculation con- | cerning the future of motor car mer- | chandising is receiving little atten- tion. 'RAIL LINES LAUNCH | ADVERTISING DRIVE Western Roads Lower Rates and Comfort Due to | [ Stress Air Conditioning. | Spectal Dispatch to The Star. CHICAGO, April 18.—Essential de- tails of an advertising campaign of the | Western railroads are announced by Harry G. Taylor, chairman, Western Association of Railway Execu- tives. The main theme is air con- ditioning with further emphasis j on eccnomy of | travel by train in the West, where basic rates have been reduced and charges elimi- nated. ‘The newspaper appeal in the East differs from Harry G. Taylor. that in the West bectause the subject in the former will be primarily summer travel. Western newspapers emphasis will be given to all of the advantages of rail travel, such as lower travey costs, time | saving by train, dependability of sched- \ ules, comfort based on new and im- proved conveniences and the generally admitted safety factor, backed by the remarkable record that Western car- riers have made on this score. For the newspaper campaign which represents a preponderant percentage of the appropriation here are some of the headlines: “Romance returns to the railroads.” “Fresh as the breath of Spring.’ “Mark Twain was wrong. “It is always good weather.” ‘Clean as an April shower.” “Men can wear white linens now.” “It's cool when it's hot.” “As quiet as the dawn. Obviously, the foregoing headlines are an exploitation of the big news for the Western railroads—air condi- sleeping car sur- | P the fact, however, that for this wee: in April, 1934, bank clearings were 2 a record total for over two years, anc in only one week since that time ha the amount been so high.
