FINANCIAL. (5. BONDS TURN SLIGHTLY UNEVEN' Utilities Make Best Gains. | Other Groups Mostly on Even Keel. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, March 2.—The bond market pursued a fairly even trend | today, with best gains recorded by utility issues. United States Govern- ments were a trifle irregular. Ignoring the highly unsettled condi. tion of foreign exchange markets, in- vestment quarters paid close attention to developments having a direct bear- | ing on securities, especially the state- | ment of J. F. Fogarty, president of | the North American Co., one of the | largest public utility organizations in | the country, that he believed pending | Federal legislation dealing with utili- | ties would be defeated. ! Quiet accumulation of some of the better situated utility bqpds has been ! noted from time to time in the past | month, and a considerable amount of | switching from secondary railroad ob- | ligations into this type of security was evident early this week when the carrier situation became more acute. Advances ranging from !> to more than a point were made Utilities | Power & Light 5!55 at 331, Utah| Light & Traction 5s at 8415, Columbia Gas & Electric 5s at 75’4 and North American Edison debenture 5s at 837 Among others selling higher were ob- | ligations of Detroit Edison, Laclede Gas, Metropolitan Edison and Port- land General Electric. The Associated Press avefage of 10 utilities advanced .3 of a point to 88.7. The averages for 20 rails, 10| industrials and 10 low-yield bonds were .2 of a point lower to .2 of a point higher. In other sections of the corporate list price changes were generally nar- row. Bonds of the Paramount Fa- mous-Players were an exception and recorded gains of 1 to 2 points on a heavy turnover. A few of the rails were in demand at slightly higher prices, including Chesapeake & Ohio| bs and St. Louis-Southwestern 4s. In the Government section Liberty 3!2s were 5-32 higher at 102.28 and ‘Treasury 3s of 1944 were 3-32 lower at 105.2. Home Owners’ Loan issues, in which the heaviest trading oc- curred, showed small changes. Transfers aggregated $6,563,000, par | value, compared with $8,480,000 last Saturday. Chicago Grain By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, March 2 —Predictions | of timely moisture next week in the | form of rain or snow helpful to do- | mestic crops led to late set-backs of grain prices today. Suggestions of a gold crisis abroad, with asserted strong accompanying possibilities of inflation, acted earlier as a bullish influence on grains, not- withstanding a violent tumble of the British pound sterling. On the other hand, as a result of prevailing mone- tary uncertainties, the volume of grain dealings dwindled afterward and this had an evident tendency to make Pprices relapse. Wheat closed nervous around the day’s bottom level, 1x-% under yes- terday’s finish; May, 97%,a977%. Corn, 12 off to % up; May, 84a8415. Oats, t 14 decline to ¢ advance, and pro- visions varying from 2 cents loss to a rise of 12 cents. ‘With gold skyrocketing to a new all- time high price record today and sil- ver at a six-year peak, all else but financial factors were secondary dur- ing most of the time in the grain pits. ‘Traders were inclined to go slow on either side of the wheat market, in particular, until the confusion of for- eign exchange movements had been measureably cleared up. Meanwhile, however, more or less selling pressure developed in the corn trade and had some bearish influence on wheat. A noticeable increase of rural mar- keting of corn was reported. Trade leaders said corn values were feeling the effect of United States imports of all kinds of feed grains. In some quarters, it was emphasized, that other things being equal, Argentina could now offer rye and oats more than half a cent a bushel cheaper because of the sharp drop of sterling the past two days. Heavier receipts of corn in Chicago today than either a week or a year ago forced the cash corn basis 15al1; cents a bushel lower. Oats mainly followed corn. For the most part, provisions ruled higher, aided by a bigger decrease of Chicago stocks of lard than was ex- pected. Grain range at principal markets today: Low. NEW YORK, March 2.—Cotton was quiet and steady today within a nar- | row margin range. Opening declines | were followed by partial recoveries on | trade buying and covering with May ! selling up from 1241 to 1246 and closing at 12.45. The market closed steady, net unchanged to 3 points lower. First prices were barely steady at a | decline of 4 to 8 points but offerings were soon absorbed and prices re- covered to yesterday's closing quota- tions on the new crop months. The close was at about the best. The amount of cotton on shipboard awaiting clearance at the end of the week was estimated at 94,000 bales, against 147.000 last year.
