A—14 DRUG RAIDS YIEL VAST INFORMATION 750 Arrested Throughout U. S.—Baby Found Among Addicts. By the Associated Press. A cross-section of the misty world of the narcotic peddler and addiet is expected by Narcotics Bureau offi- clals to result eventually from the spectacular Nation-wide raid of two months ago. Statistics and factual reports that may not be reduced to figures, gleaned from the simultaneous descent upon this element in every major city of the land, when finally assembled may prove of lasting value, it is hoped. A careful tab is being kept upon the disposition of each case, to which are added data on the subjects, back- ground and environment. Especially attention is being paid to the court treatment accorded offenders with previous criminal records. 750 Arrests Made. In all, more than 750 arrests were made. Where prosecution under State and municipal laws promised to prove more expeditious than in the Federal courts this method was chosen. Few Federal Court actions have yet been completed because obtaining indict- ments and preparing the cases for presentation takes time. Although exact figures are not yet available, Commissioner H. J. Ans- linger said yesterday there had been numerous pleas of guilty. In a num- ber of cases in which the charge was merely addiction, local courts quickly imposed short sentences, he said, or consigned the addict to a reduction treatment. One reduction treatment, he added, has already proved effective—and this is the most striking case to result from the raid. At Seattle a man and his wife and their 10-day-old baby, all addicts, were taken into custody. The infant, it was explained, was addicted through absorption in the pre-natal period and could not live without continued administration of marcotics. It was taken to a hospital and the amounts of the narcotic in its case, beginning with small quanti- ties, were gradually reduced to noth- ing. Large Quantities Seized. Large quantities of contraband nar- cotics were seized in the raids, but Anslinger declined to make any esti- mate of their amount. “Of course, you could arrive at an enormous street value, or price on the illegal market,” he said, “but that would be misleading.” Much of the dope was extensively adulterated, he said, with some of the purported morphine containing as little as 15 per cent of that element. ‘This, he added, made it virtually im- possible to fix a price on the legal market. In fact, he said, an interesting by- product of the December raid, and those since, have been numerous com- plaints from addicts concerning the power of the narcotics they had been buying. That phase of the program featured “Hands Across the Sea,” the Sousa march dedicated to the Royal Welch Fusil- liers, and Gen.
