A-8 THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, FRIDAY, JANUARY 25 1935. JAPAN UNSHAKEN, SAYS YAMAMOTO Envoy to Leave London for Tokio to Press Drive for New Treaty. By the Associated Press. LONDON, January 25.—Outspoken, seagoing, rough-and-ready Vice Ad- miral Isoroku Yamamoto, spokesman for Japan’s future naval policy, pre- pared today for his return to Tokio to report on the recent London naval conversations. He will leave for home Monday via Siberia, ready to assist his govern- ment in its new campaign for a naval treaty based on equality with a low- tonnage limitation at the same level for Japan, Great Britain and the United States, ‘Welcomes Interview. Approached for a valedictory state- muu Admiral Yamamclo told the in- terviewer to “fire away ‘Will Japan compromise and ac- cept a relative naval strength less than equality with the United States | and Great Britain?” “Never: we must have equality,” he shot back. This hard-bitten sailor has, in a fearless, blunt, but friendly manner, made Japan's demands and plans un- usually clear. “We Mean Business.” From the patriotic viewpoint, he likes his task of trying to persuade the United States and Great Britain to sign a new treaty along the lines proposed by Japan—equality on a common upper level of armaments at the lowest possible point and the elimi- nation of what Japan terms offensive ships. which are aircraft carriers, battleships and large cruisers “I think the world knows how we stand now and that we mean busi- ness.” said Yamamoto. “We want a new treaty, and we will spare no efforts to get one, but we will never consent to an inferior position again. If the other powers will just agree to our scheme for the abolition of offensive ships, then there will be no need for large fleets, and war will become only defensive, with real effective peace resulting.” “Best Dressed” MRS.
