Creeds will be forgotten when Judge John Barton Payne, venerable chair- man of the American Red Cross, is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery tomorrow afternoon following funeral services at 2 pm. at St. John's Church, Six- teenth and H streets. Judge Payne died of pneumonia early yesterday at G‘et:‘rze Washington University Hos- pital. Rev. J. Oliver Hart, Episcopal rector, will preach at the church rites, while the Rev. W. Coleman Nevils, 8. J., president of Georgetown University, will speak at the grave. It was Father Nevils, close friend of Judge Payne, who accompaniéd him to the recent International Red Cross Conference at Tokio. Expressions of condolence continued to pour into the Red Cross headquar- ters today. Telegrams arrived from officials of the organization from all points in the United States and from several foreign countries. Minister Michael MacWhite of the Irish Free State called at headquarters to express the sympathy of the Irish people. Judge Payne’s body will lie at his home, 1601 I street, until,the funeral. Active pallbearers will be composed of executives of the Red Cross, in- cluding Robert E. Bondy, Harold F. Enlows, Thomas W. Gosling, Don C. Smith, Howard J. Simons, Richard F. Grimm, 69, former Fire { Department captain in Washington, died yesterday at his home in Her- mosa Beach, Calif., it was reported by the Associated Press. Grimm’s record as furnished by the Fire Department headquarters shows that he was appointed to the force on November 23, 1888. On July 1, 1897, he was made a foreman, a rank which corresponds to that of captain today, and served in that capacity | until March 1, 1911. Because of poor health he retired at that time. His record shows a citation in 1903 for his action in responding to a bad fire while on leave from duty on April 28 of that year. Following his retirement in 1911, | Capt. Grimm lived for several years | in Mount Rainier, Md., where he ran a small store. Before moving to Cali- fornia in 1927, he lived for a short while in Arizona.
