BY FREDERICK GARDNER, Associated Press Pinancial Writer. A new tide of gold moving to the United States is lifting the supply of the metal in Uncle Sam’s vaults toward record levels and muddying the foreign exchange outlook. With more than $100,000,000 en- gaged for shipment to New York the past few days, indications are the physical volume of the country’s gold reserve shortly will surpass the 1931 eak. PThe latest Treasury statement shows gold assets above $8,300,000,000. In terms of the former value of the dollar, that is equivalent to around $4,900,000,000, compared with the peak figure of a little above $5,000,- 000,000 recorded before England left the gold standard in September, 1931, and precipitated an outflow of the metal from New York. Financing Path Smoothed. Aside from its potential effect upon stabilization maneuvers, the flow of gold from abroad is leaving its impress upon the domestic money market 2| and Government financing. It is contributing toward mainte- | nance of interest rates at extremely *|low levels and smoothing the path for impending Treasury offerings. As a result mainly of the mounting | gold stock and Government spending, reserve balances of member banks of the Federal Reserve System have | reached a peak of about $4,500,000,000, | leaving them with a huge excess of | funds seeking investment outlet. Since the turn of the year the Treasury has deposited more than | | $150,000,000 in gold certificates with the Federal Reserve and yet retains |a “free” gold supply in its general | | fund of approximately $930,000,000. - 'currencles was followed by a Linked With Gold Cases. Metal now filling the strongboxes 1 of ships leaving Europe for New York ,Ls associated with the impending | “gold clause” cases before the Su- preme Court. The current movement started with the recent arguments on the gold cases. A rise in the dollar against | the French franc and other European re- | sumption of a flow which had vir- | tually dried up early in January. | Opinion among foreign exchange | observers is divided whether th= gold clause litigation in Washington or | doubt over the ability of the European gold bloc to weather the depression | without revaluing their currencies is | the dominating influence behind the | movement of capital to the United | States. Heavy imports in November b'.‘a"d December accompanied recur- |rent fears the gold bloc would not | | hold out. At any rate, dispatches from abroad | report “de-hoarding” of foreign capi- {tal held in Paris and other money | centers, much of it moving to the United States. 5| | May Postpone Action. | As some monetary students see the | | situation, accumulation of metal in the United States may postpone in- | | ternational currency stabilization, un- | less the gold drain forces an early | showdown on the question of revalua- | tion in France, Belgium and Hollard, | Leading members of the so-called gold loc. The United States has nearly 40 per cent of the world’s monetary gold | supply. The Association of American Rail- roads announced today that loadings of revenue freight for the week ended January 19 were 562,655 cars, an in- crease of 9,280 above the preceding week, 1,053 above the corresponding week in 1934 and 63,401 above the cor- responding week in 1933. Miscellaneous freight loaded during the week of January 19 was 201242 cars, an increase of 1,284 above the preceding week, 10,345 above 1934 and 42,455 above 1933. The Bank of England owned about | $1,500,000,000 and the Bank of France about $5,500,000,000. As the figures | show, France is strongly fortified against a drain on its supply. But | aside from the “big three,” monetary | metal is thinly spread among the | rest of the trading nations, with Ger- many at the end of November down to $32,000,000. Consequently, the fresh How to the United States, it was pointed out is likely to strengthen arguments for “managed currencies” on the ground ! there is not enough gold to go ar~und for international trading purposes. —— REICHSBANK STATEMENT. e BERLIN, January 25 (P.—The Reichs bank statement as of Jani the following changes' in Reichsmarks: Gold and bulllon increased 30,000: reserva in foreign currencies increased 09,000: bllls of exchange and cheques decreased 154.843.000:.
