S DOLLY GANN SEES £. 0.P. COMEBACK Calls on All Elements of Party 1 to Work Unceasingly Till 1936. This is the scventeenth and last of a series of daily articles in which Mrs. Dolly Gann, sister of Charles Curtis, Vice President in the Hoover | administration, has given reminis- cences of her interesting experiences in politics and society in Washington. BY DOLLY GANN. This country is normally Republican by 6.000,000 or 7.000,000 votes. As our party’s ticket lost in 1932 by more than 6,500,000 votes, the obvious query Is, overconfident, that our campaign was | Democrats in their dealings with re- | calcitrant members of their party, I do_ late starting. The rise of the Progressive' element | in the Republican party has sapped much of fits lidarity of organization. We will come back when our party comes back to itself. The Democratic candidate was clected by discontented Republicans, and be- fore we can have any real hope cf suc- ]ceu there must b2 a re'urn to the possible to proe ~ from their ranks many will fell to follow D~mo- cratic leadership on some major qu tions, Indications are already plain that there is not unanimity among th: \Dsmocuu even the leaders, on forelmn debts, banking and currency, and the | means necessary for raising revenue to | balance the budget. There i also| bound to be much divergence of opin- | | ion regarding the soldiers’ bonus; and jof an organization “Why?" The devastating defeat was brought about by a combination of many things, chief among them the depression. When | the Republican party could no longer { produce bumper crops and busy fac- tories, or guarantee free flow of credit ! and growing foreign markets, the people | felt its wizardry had gone. When the financial merkets crashed in 1929 con- ditions were created which could not be overcome in the short interval before the national campaign of 1932. President Hoover and his _cabinet | worked out reiief programs without re- | gard to the effect upon their political fortunes. For a time the Democrats| went along with the Republicans, but the opportunity to play politics was too | alluring. They determined on a gram of their own. If any was ever decided upon. however, kept it a de-p sec: ntil afier election. | ‘The 2dministrotic s the targat for | criticism from farmer. laboring man, merchant and manufacturer. They hed improved financial as- slmmo and for four years maintained -powered publicity bureau which lo(t no opportuni thing that could the Republican pa: particularly thos: connected with the national administration. | It was charged by some that the pur- pose of this bureau was to ‘‘smear Hoover.” Whether this be true or not it is certain the barrage of unfriendly criticism aimed at the Chief Executive and nearly all the other high officers continued to be laid down by the chief publicity writer and his assistants. In contrast, the efforts of the Republican Publicity Bureau was so feeble as to be almost non-existent.
