Both of them had raised their hats and were smiling that eternally confidential op- timistic smile which is so character- istic of all Western civilization when it is about to be photographed. And about two diplomats there was a half aircle of functionaires grouped in half shadow engaged in awkard conversation. “Ready, gentlemen?” At once the forced conversation faded away from the smiling lips. Eight pairs of eyes stared straight into the appa- ratus. It was a difficult job to take these eminent gentlemen. Francis Hansom of the Evening Press of New York, with his tiny, high- powered camera, was among those who were photographing the group of dip- lomats. He had been assigned by his paper to follow Mr. Bartlett's trip from the nning—without yet having dis- covered the secret purpose of it. He had come to the point of view that his chief, the political editor of the Eve- ning Press, was an ass, and that Bart- lett had come to Europe only to be photographed and to_attend recep- nd banquets. Even his return | on a German steamer meant nothing more than the desire to be feted. “Will you move this way, please?” The operators wanted a shot against the background of the incessantly droning orchestra, and Mr. Bartlett cmiably delayed his good-by to his next-door neighbor, and took his place in front of the big jazz drum. He was a tall, lean man about 40 years of age. When he smiled his eyes disappeared |among many little wrinkles, and his face was dominated by a strong, clean- shaven jaw, with thin lips. “I knew him whea he was this high,” said Veith. “That is to say, we sailed on the same ship, through the Med- iterranean, two years after the Peace Treaty. He was then secretary to a shipping magnate called Stephanson. Never heard of Stephanson? He is a madman, my dear fellow, by birth a Greek or an Armenian. His name was originally Stepanides. ICES should like to know what he is doing today, and if it should be your privie lege to be called upon to treat Mr. Bartlett, you really must ask him about | | Stephanson—but here is our csptain! He hates this leave-taking business, but if they must take films he doesn't want | to be left out. Hello, Fred, old boy.” ‘The captain turned suddenly. He was a small, wiry man, whote hair was al- ready beginning to go gray. His face bore the fixed, artificial smile meant for the camera. It did not exactly suit his sharp, ugly but wise expression, to which he owed the nicknzame “Fred- crick the Great.” “He is a real char- acter,” Veith wispered. And Thomas remembered that this was his high- est commendation for manly virtues. The captain greeted Veith most cordially, and let him tell his sad tale about chronic appendicitis. “Too bad,” he said, “I had a lot of news for you. And we shall have a most interesting trip with all these Amer- ican: “Tell it all to my friend, Thomas. He has a miraculous memory, and I will heatf all about it when we meet again. And besides, be as nice to him as you can, for he is one of the best lads in the world. Today maybe he’s saved my life. And keep him away from ‘gold diggers,’ if you have shipped any.” “Do you happen to be married?” asked the captain. Thomas felt the blcod rising to his face. “Yes,” he said, and immediately regretted it. What would he say if he were asked where his wife was? But no one asked Thomas about his wife. The captain was called away, and said as he went, “See you later. Veith took Thomas by the arm and said, “Now I will show you your new headquarters.” He was at home on the Columbis; while he led Thomas three flights of stairs down to C Deck, he shook count- less hands. He did not seem to notice that his friend was acting quite differently from other people who for the first time found themselves on a floating giant of the Columbia’s magnificence. Thomas ut- tered no cries of astonishment, put no questions, but kept constantly looking about hi he was absent-minded and completely silent. On three occasions he imagined that he saw Sybil and Shortwell among the crowds of curiosity seekers on the upper deck; now as they were pasing along the corridors between the ger cabins he thought he heard her voice behind every door. One of these doors bore the inscrip- tion: Doctor. They entered. “You will be even more comfortable here than the luxury cabin passengers,” said Veith. “You have a living room with bath and a working room as well. Here is your consultation room and lab- oratory. We have three isolation wardz, with their own kitchen and service—but you are not listening to me?"” “Oh, yes, yes, I am.” Thomas with & sart of start pulled himself together. “Every morning,” Veith continued, “you have to make the rounds of the whole ship. That is one of your duties. Usually it does not mean much more than merely saying ‘Good morning’ to every cne. It is best to make your first round at once, even before dinner. Then you will have learned your way about the ship.” “You are not missing the tender?” asked Thomas, for he could hardly wait for the moment when he would be alone to be able to pursue his heart’s pre-occupation. “No dange Before then there will | be a great hullabaloo of whistles. etc. Here your medicine cabinet. And here on the left"—Veith opened the door to the adjoining cabin—"is your operating room, of course for minor op- erations only. The real operating thea- ter is in the hospital—" They crossed the threshold. “Oh, and this is Sister Martha, known as the ‘float- ing sister.’ " Between the operating table and a chair & woman was standing in sister’s costume, cleaning a test-tube. Two strands of smooth blond hair shpwed from beneath her headdress and en- circle€ a thin, deeply tanned fac:. She was perhaps 30 years old and might | have been very pretty had her eyes | and lips possessed more color. With | her slenderness, Sister Martha might have looked like an athletic girl in perfect training, instead of like an escetic nun. Veith was delighted, for Tommy would now have the “best possible com- panionship.” But he was rather sur- prised to meet Sister Martha on this line. “Weren't you at one time with the East India Line?” | “I am not going to the tropics any | more,” said Sister Martha. “The last | time I came home with fever. | " At this moment the “great hullabaloo” | sounded through the ship; floors and walls seemed to sway with the noise. | Veith kissed the sister's hand and | drew Thomas out into the corridor. | “Come down with me, it's only one | fight—TI want to tell you about Sister | Martha—or, rather, I want you to teil |me when you get back if ycu have | discovered her secret; I have not been |able to. All I know is that for seven | years she has ceaselessly sailed the seven seas. She is nowhere at home. ‘Whatever the journey’s end, she always | stays on board; at most, she goes | ashore fer a couple of hours to make a few purchases— “She is a perfect nurse, sensible, de- pendable and devoted and in no way an uncomfortable personality. You can now and then have a game of cards with her or shuffieboard: she will drink up to two or three glasses of cognac— but she simply will not hear of love. On her various ships she has had more offers of marriage than another woman gets in seven seasons of dances and balls. She obviously has no de- sire for a home of her own. Odd with a woman—isn't it? And che is com- pletely indifferent to men and all that sort of thing.” They had gone down the stairs to P deck and caught sight of the deck of the tender through an open double door, over the heads of the departing throng. “Tommy," Veith suddenly said very gently, “I don’t know why you want to sail on the Columbia. I don't know what you are looking for on her and what you are all the time thinking about. But I know that under all cir- cumstances—" He hemmed, hunting for particularly tactful words, but did not find them. “I shall always do my duty,” Thomas said, expressing the unspoken thought for him, and flushed deep red. “Of course you will; I know that, [——" Veith coughed in his embar- rassment and under the stress of his emotion. He wrung his friend’s hand so hard that it hurt. “Oh, the devil! I haven't done any- thing but talk about myself all the time, and didn't quite know how to ask about you, and now—" The last passengers were stumbling acrdss the gangway. “Now I can only wish you good luck,” he concluded and stumbled after them. ‘Thomas followed his broad back with his eyes for a few seconds, then the gway was raised and the double s:;r shut. ‘Thomas was alone. For a short time he felt it a relief to be alone and to let his repressed thoughts flow back to the subject which so pre-occupied his heart. It was only a question of hours, fof minutes, perhaps, before he would meet Sybil. Where would it be— in the corridor, in the main hall, in the dining room? Would she be fright- ened, moved, or would she run away? Above everything else—would she be alone? (To be continued tomorrow.) Tooth of Huge Shark Found.
