B—6 = CONSCIENGE FUND NOW OVER $600,000 Anonymous Gift of $1,000 Gold Certificate Received by Government. By the Associated Press. The Government’s conscience fund | s growing. It is now well past the $600,- 000 mark, bult up slowly through the | years since 1811 by those who feel they owe a just debt or have a gift to make. Virtually all the money going into the conscience fund—it's really no fund at all, but merely a tabulation of receipts, with tne donations being spent as needed—comes anonymously. Some of the donors give explanations; some don't. A $1,000 gold certificate sent as a gift boosted the fund this week. Another anonymous contributor added a $5 gold piece. The fund was started in 1811 when $250 was received from one person. | At the end of 1932 the fund amounted | to $602.289. The largest amount re- ceived in a single vear was in 1916 District’s Heroes in the World War Compiled by Sergt. L. E. Jaeckel. S recorded in the official cita- tion, Aristides Moreno, lieuten- ant_colonel, Infantry, General Staff Corps, United States Army, was awarded the Dis- tinguished Service Medal for excep- tionally meritorious and distinguished services in a posi- tion of great re- sponsibility. As a member of the In- telligence Section, he efficiently or- ganized and direct- led the operations of the counter-es- pionage service in the American Ex- peditionary Forces, displaying marked talents in this po- sition of great re- sponsibility. His unusual powers of discernment, his tact, and sound judgment made possible effective co-operation with corresponding services of the allied armies. Through his zeal and untiring devotion, the counter-es: pionage service attained exceptional proficiency. THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D.
