THE EVENING, STAR. WASHINGTON, D: (., THURSDAY, MARCH 23, '1933. From the Front Row Reviews and News of Washington's Theaters. : By E. de S. MELCHER “Gulliver's Travels” Undergoing Screen Treatment. MONG the more interesting screen announcements of the new season is the one which comes from Carl Laemmle, jr., to the effect that “Gulli- ver's Travels” is undergoing screen treatment in Universal City, Calif. Although this studio has, to all in- tents and purposes, been dormant for the past six ‘weeks, it seems that cinema moguls have been rehashing Jonathan Swifts well known tale and that action. un- der the direc- tion of Karl Freund. has started on this L il1i putian- B r obdignagian yarn There is, for instance in Universal City something called the “mys- tery stage.” It is here (called fa- miliarly stage X2) that the great secrets of the Universal world are carried on. Since February 2, when the annual shutdown occurred, the outside world thuoght that all was quiet on this Western front. What was actually going on was that Di- rector Karl Freund (noted for hav- ing directed “The Mummy’—an achievement of one kind and an- other, depending on how you look at it) has been reading and re-read- ing Jonathan Swift's satire and that as soon as the studio goes into ac- tion again Universal will do a screen version of the same. This is promised an elaborate filming. Now that the screen has attained the photographic success which the public will see this week in “King Kong" it is not hard to imagine that Mr. Swift’s infinitesi- mal creatures, as also his giants of another world, should get a good screening. Although it /is to be doubted if apes and brontosauruses and other mammoth animals of our prehistoric zoo will be featured, at Jeast the “hero” of “Gulliver's Trav- els” will have to be compared to people who are way out of his reach in size and again people who are so small that he has to be careful not to step on them. With careful treatment this should be one of the most interesting ex- periences of the year. As long as hey do not try to combine a “beauty and the beast” theme against a background of skyscrapers and bat- tleships — as long as Fay Wray doesn't come along and fall in love with Mr, Gulliver (we hope not Mr. Gable), as long as they remember that this is a satire and not a true story—the film should be a fantasy well worth seeing—and particularly satisfying to children and peace- fully-minded grown-ups. Fay Wray, Press Club Jubilee To Present “The Stork Stalks.” WWHAT s likely to bethe first “stage” event that President Roosevelt attends in Washington will be James 's play, “The Stork Stalks,” will be a feature of the Press Club's “silver jubilee dinner” to be given the night of March 29. Against a 1909 background and in a setting which is said to be a duplicate of one of the Press Club's first rooms, veteran actors of this club will per- form under the direction of Clifford Brooke—Washington's ace director, Who is also whipping local thespians into action for his academy night at the National. Yesterday Director Brooke tock his press men over their first dramatic jumps. Those ob- served to be particularly successful before the megaphone were Jack Daly. Richard Westwood, Thomas Dowd, Henry Radcliffe, Charles Gridley. Frank Hall, H. R. Bauk- hage, Russell Edwards, Benjamin Meiman and Robert Wood. “When Ladies Meet” Coming to the National. ATRONS of the local American Theater Socicty should rejoice in the news that one of this season's most successful Broadway comedies, manager at present of “Cavalcade” at the National, will make Wash- ington his home. A member of the Stage and Screen Committee of the National Democratic party in New York under Eddie Dowling, and widely known in this country and in Europe for his campaign motion picture ability, Mr. Meade will be remembered as the man who put “Hell's Angels” across in London in spite of somewhat fierce oppo- sition. Dancers to Help Needy. A barn dance, with food for the needy the price of admission. will be held by the Southeast Community Center at the Hine Junior High School, Seventh and C streets southeast, tomorrow night. The public is requested to bring_as much canned féod as possible. The donations will be distributed to author- ized agencies. THE NEW C1iS 1216-1220 F STREET e RELATION OF DENTISTRY TO MEDICINE STRESSED Dr. Boyd Gardner of Mayo Hospi- tal Addresses Dental and Medical Societies. ‘The relation of dentistry to medicine was emphasized by Dr. Boyd Gardner, director of the dental clinic at the Mayo Hospital in Rochester, Minn., in a talk last night before a joint meeting of the District of Columbia Dental and Medical Societies at 1718 M street, Dr. Harry Fowler, president of the medlr’l society, presided and Dr. Wil- liam 1. Ogus introduced Dr. Gardner. Dr. Gardner held that dental re- quirements of today require the affili- ation of dental colleges with medical schools, or the addition of a medical man to the dental college staff to teach ‘d!nml students that a mouth condition | is a systematic manifestation of a gen- eral condition. More and more, he said, the dentist | is getting away from the purely cor- | rective work and getting into the field | of preventive dentistry. Many times, he | claimed, decay is due to lack of cal- | ciumor phosphorus in the diet, but the dentist finds it very hard to cor- rect the diet of a patient. He advocated the use of the X-ray both befare and after extractions. The talk was discussed by Dr. Earl Clark, M. D.; Dr. Arthur Crane, D. D, 8., and Dr. Sterling Mead, D. D. A buffet supper followed the meeting. SWALLOWS WRONG BILL LR, Man Accused of Operating Hand- book Is Held by Police. It Morris Slavsky was awakened by an attack of indigesticn this morning, he had only himself to blame. Slavsky, who is 20, was arrested at Twelfth gnd H streets northeast yes- terday on a charge of operating a hand- book. When Detective George E. Thornton and Policeman E. B. Howlin took him’into custody he jammed s dollar bill into his mouth and, after a hasty bit of mastication, swallowed it. It seems, according to the officers, that he thought the bill had been marked and planted on him as evi- dence. It developed, however. that he had swallowed the wrong bill, so he was taken to the precinct and locked up. Tomorrow!
