THE SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C., MARCH 12, 1850—PART OAE. A—13 - e Books Delight Cabinet Wife BOYS FORMPART. SEK Y FFES Youths, All Under 22, Ask|bangs Key Posts in lllinois Town’s Government. By the Assoctated Press. CHARLESTON, Ill, March 11— Breaking with both major parties and organizing the “Progressive People's party,” a political faction of their own, six young men--all 22 years of age or under—are secking key cffices in Charleston’s government. Led by a campaign manager who recently reached his majority, they promise voters a “red hot campaign,” ‘with such features as an cld fiddlers’ contest, tcrch rallies and programs by a jazz band. Robert Tripp, 23. is candidate for mayor; James Springer, 21, for city clerk; Thomas Negley, 21, for city treasurer, and Wesley Neal, 21, Robert Adams, 22, and Edward Grant, 22, for aldermen. Their manager is Jack Owens, 21. Dissatisfled with the way “old folks” | have been managing municipal affairs, the “youth party” has announced a platform including economy, a city- owned “lighting system, sclution of the parking problem. better streets, a lower vehicle tax and greater aid for the un- employed. The usual array of Democratic and Republican candidates filed for the primary election to be held March 14, but the “youth party.” filing a petition with 500 signatures and the names of their candidates, expected their slate to be placed on the final ballots with- out participation in the primary. Such procedure, they contended, complied with election laws. Charleston, a town of about 8,000 population, is the site of Eastern Illi- nois Teachers’ College, and several of the youthful' candidates are still in college. MRS. HOMER S. CUMMINGS HE influence of books, music and the Attorney General. Small, with curly black hair, and arched eyebrows. She is bright and moves about on her tiny feet with precision. Eorn in Dairlen, Conn., Mrs. Cum- mings spent much of her youth abroad. She s:udied at the Sorbonne and at the Al'iance Francaise and matriculated at Columbia University and the new School for Social Research in New York. The Cummings family, there are just two of them, honestly enjoy study. To them it is a recreation, and most of it is centered around politics, soclology and political eccnomy. In their spacioys home in Greenwich they have an_extensive collection of books. Mrs. Cummings recently de- scribed with fecling their big entrance hall, headed by a broad, hospiiable stairway. There is & landing on this stair case, lined with books from the ceiling to the floor. In Mr. Cummlng studv are 150 autographed photcrap! of his friends and in his office W has many more. The house is furnished ccmfortably with a preference for Eng- lish furniture. Mrs, Cummings has one modern _rcom and that is the guest room. Ths colors are green and violet and she says that guests have found it very restful. Mrs. Cummings’ favorite exercise is walking, Mr. Cummings’ athletic rec- reation is golf. She says he would walk miles after a small white ball but not one foot without that incentive. Mrs. Cummings is extremely fond of traveling, especially off the tourist path. Both she and Mr. Cummings combine their love for reading with this and di- gest all they can about the history and customs of & new country before they visit it. Her idea of the most preferable en- tertaining is an informal party with good talk. She is prepared to meet all the requirements demanded of her hus- band's position but, to her, fun is that certain sparkle that appears only in small groups Her rarest quality, as a cabinet wife, is an impersonal, definite appreciation FURNITURE CO.
