MONTGOMERY AREA GAINS PUPULATIUN‘ State Statistics Reveal In-; crease of 1,500, Bringing Total to 53,375. By a Staff Correspondent of The Btar. ROCKVILLE, Md., February 2.—An increase in population of 1,500 was re- corded in Montgomery County during the past year, according to statistics compiled by the Bureau of Vital Sta- tistics of the Maryland State Depart- ment of Health, and the county finished 1932 with a total population of §3,375. The population of 9 of the State's 23 counties showed decreases, accord- ing to the data compiled by the health officials, which places Montgomery County in seventh place in Maryland and shows this community to be grow- ing faster than the State as a whole. Montgomery is exceeded in popula- tion now by only Allegany County, which, includes the city of Cumberland; Anne * Arundel, including cAnnapolis; Baltimore, including Baltimore City; Frederick, including the city of Fred- erick; Washington County, which in- cludes Hagerstown, and Prince Gecrges. Takoma Park, with a population of 7,444, Temains the largest town in the county. the report discloses. Rockville has a population of 1,510, and Gaithers- burg 1,175. All these towns showed in- creases in population, while 17 towns of more than 1,000 population in Mary- land shoucd decreases. MISSOURI PARDON SOUGHT BY FUGITIVE Colorado Commutes Smeeman’s Sentence and He Goes to Jefferson City. By the Associated Press. KANSAS CITY, February 2.—Freed by a Governor’s commutation of com- pleting a sentence for car theft in Colorado, Glenn Smecman, 33, today was en route. in custody of an officer, to Jefferson City to seek a pardon from a sentence for a similar crime in Missouri. After that he will resume his work as a Cleveland music publisher. Smeeman escaped from a Colorado road gang soon after he was com- mitted in that State in 1918. He became & business success. He returned to Col- ordo voluntarily after he was arrested in Cleveland recently. He arrived here late last night and left this morning. At Jefferson City Smeeman will ap- Kal to Gov. Guy B. Twentr-two Chinese seamen were taken off the liner Santa Teresa yes- terday and taken to Ellis Island to await deportation proceedings. Protests from the International Sea- men’s Union resulted in the 206 Chinese being taken off the liner President Lin- coln when it arrived here last Saturday. They came as passeng>rs, but 20 of | them were to have been employed on the Santa Elisa and the remainder on the President Johnson, which has been chartered for a world cruise. Iminigration officials said the 20 Chi- nese were being excluded because they have no visas. The Government con- tended they did not come in as bona fide passengers in transit.
