UNION VETERANS CUESTS AT BANQUET Seven of 52 District Survivors of G. A. R. Attend Function Closing Encampment. ‘The District’s 52 survivors of the Grand Army of the Republic were rep- resented by seven of their comrades last night, when they were guests of honor at a banquet at the Kennedy-Warren, following the annual encampment. Be- sides the seven members of the Depart- ment of the Potomac, Commander in Chief Willlam P. Wright of Chicago and Past Commander in Chief John R. King of the Department of Maryland were the only other Union veterans present. The banquet was given by the Woman's Relief Corps, the auxiliary to the G. A. R. Senator Arthur Robinson of Indiana addressed the banquet, which was at- tended by several hundred relatives of the veterans and members of various euxiliary organizations. John H. Shepherd was elected com- mander of the Department of the Po- tomac at the closing session of the en- campment at 808 I street yesterday. Other officers include: John N. Kline and Dr, Henry A. Johnson, senior and junior_vice commanders, respectively: djutant, and William F. commander, chaplain, as stricken ill several da; ago, and was unable to attend yester- day’s events. In attendance at the banquet last night were Dr. Charles V. Petteys, John T. Ryen, Dr. Johnson, Mr. Shepherd, Mr. Kline, Mr. Godfrey and Maj. James | A. Abbott. Sentences on 206 French soldiers have been either remitted or reduced this year. AMARILLO, Tex., February 3.—A new menace to traffic—Russian thistles that drift into the highways and pile up to a depth of several feet—has ap- peared on Texas Panhandle Plains roads this Winter. ‘The thistles, commonly known as tumble-weeds, grow extensively in wheat fields and along fence rows, then drift_before the’ wind during the Fall | and Winter, coming to rest against any | sort of obstruction, Continued rainfall throughout the small grain area delayed the harvest last Summer until in many fields the thistles grew higher than the wheat, preventing the harvest. J. W. McFolk of Amarillo drove into such a drift between Silverton and Floyada, and spent 35 minutes backing his car out of the entanglement. He said it was necessary to make a detour of several miles to avoid the weeds. “Sometimes the thistles were piled up around me as high as the car,” Mc- Folk said. “I had the worst scare of my life.
