Are Women Than Less Happy Men? BY KATHLEEN NORRIS. Love, health, service—in these woman must give and take the first, herself for the third. lle the secret of happiness. Every must achieve the second, must train Many women don’t realize how much health has to do with the power to live fully. The difference between sluggishness and unhappiness, worry and discouragement and boredom, can often be traced to physical causes— tiny causes, trifling causes, but enou spirit. Be well! to dare, to take a chance! To be once chronically unhappy else. Happiness is an attitude, not a 0O many women are unhappy. And in too many cases there is no real cause. Studying the lives of American women, I am less impressed with the actual troubles they have to bear than with the army of troubles they invent or im- agine for themselves, and think they have to bear, t00. | Over and over again some passionate | letter, written from & bursting heart, | will tell me of a situation that a little common sense could cure simply and | quickly. Only that grain of common | sense is lacking. Something was left | out of a girl's training a few years ago, and as a woman she has to pay, and pay doubly and trebly, for the omission It seems to me that as a sex, and | speaking broadly, women are less happy than men. Cherishing a deep secret conviction that their sex is a whole cos- | mic cycle ahead of the other; that| women's wisdom, women's characters, | their fineness, their instincts, their | courage and vision are far superior to those of men, still thinking women must admit that men are hagpler than women are This should not be so. If women are spiritually the leaders, if the churches, | with their claim to superterrestrial wis- | dom, are chiefly kept in existence | through the faith of women, then | women should know a serenity of soul, a philosophy and understanding higher | than that of men { I don't think, as a class, | It almost seems sometimes | Do they? they do. as if their very consciousness of things unseen tortured women. They are finite; they need—they cannot live | without the infinite. | * %k ok VIEN-—millions of them—are frankly of this world. Food and sleep and work occupy them wholesomely; they leave the next world out of it to die they may give it t: they listen; on death v nod thoughtfully, dutifully. But men don't strain and suffer and | brood and weep over the finding of God as women do. Even the men who as- sume the tremendous responsibility of His ministry on earth take their super- natural calling naturally, concern them- selves with taxes, buildings, ecclesias- tical quarrels and rivalries, political recommendations and denunciations, and the normal establishment of church clubs, guilds, clinics. They do this, indeed, in the name of God, and much of it is good, is often the very best of which the individual man is capable. But women never see eve to eye with men in this. Their God is the God who drove the money changers with whips from the temple, who warned His followers that every stone of it must fall before Heaven could come to earth, who said “Look ye not here nor there, for, lo! the Kingdom of Heaven is within ye.” ‘Women seek for a higher temple than any built with hands, and that is one Teason why as a sex they are restless and dissatisfied, eternally seeking for change and outlet, eternally hunting for that shred of preof-—proof that shall make God a reality, and hence make all life simple and.secure, - Once finding ‘the angwer, they can never be unhappy again. Scrubbing hospital floors, caring for repulsive ill- s, poor, shabby obscure, they find tatic content. They have reached a of clearer values than our common hly values, and thence forward a ile on the face of a slum child out- | shines the Kohinur, and peaceful sleep in some dim, crowded room carries them in dreams to palaces that make & desert sandhole of the Taj Mahal. Xk OCCASIONALLY I have met women who have found God, and less oc- casionally, have met a man who has done so. But men can be happy with- out God, and women cannot, s0 opce again we pay for our further progress, if further progress it is. If the women who write me letters from crowded unromantic city apart- ments, or from lonely mid-Western farms, or perhaps from that halfway condition that is suburban life, with its narrowness, its Testrictions, its dullness ' and duties and tiresome neighbors—if such women could once p that stupendous truth, “the Kingdom of Heaven is with you,” they would learn the lesson that we are all meant to master in this life, and emerge from the world they know into a new world of | sweetness and light. | The Kingdom of Heaven, note; not | the kingdom of earth. The children of the kingdom of earth are blind, work- ing hard for what they don't want, hurrying places they don't want to 80, putting bits of coal-dust into safety deposit vaults and noisily proclaiming themselves satisfied in a world where children are hungry, and rich men can | make wars ‘The children of Heaven are different n e x e & ‘When | n gh to chain the delicate stuff of the Be full of vigor and joy and readiness to laugh, to serve, is often to be incapable of anything bank account. | They suffer with sympathy, they wish |the world were not as the world is, | for others, for the small and weak, the | unfortunate and ignorant and unfit. apart, whether it be in the Bronx, New | York City, or upon some isolated little ranch in Northern Oregon. * o % x OVE, health, service, the secret. Hun- dreds of them are actually wretched. The artificial environment, the clothes and the caviar don't help. On the other hand, there may be within a few miles of them some little nun, of the type I met last year in New York City’s deepest shadows; busy, obscure, humble little creatures who were washing, feeding, encouraging the unfortunate from morming until night. Their house was full of plaintive, beg- ging voices, their black figures were never still, children were clinging to them, and above all the other noises sounded the sweet miraculous music of their laughter—the purest, the sweetest laughter I eveer heard, laughter from hearts brimming with content and wis- dom and love. * x o ox O, gain love fast, or thank God for it if you have it. And then gain health, perfect lightness and flexibility |and co-operation from the stupid | weight of flesh-and-bone we must all | carry about. And then look for serv- | ice—you need never look far. | starting with these, and taking every good thing as a_gift, any woman can find happiness. She will find it in dish- washing, in walking to the post office | for mail, in neighbors’ voices, in a cup | of hot morning coffee, a newspaper, a radio song, a movie. 'She will find it in planning for the old, or for children, creating excitement and beauty in lives | that were bare.
