BY ROBERT MACK. | | States today totals approximately 17.-| 1 000.000 receiving sets with a maximum | audience of about 68,000,000 persons. | That is the estimate- made by the | |industry as of April 1, exactly two years after the official radio census made by the bureau of the Census as a part of the 1930 population count. It shows beyond doubt, according to the survey. that at least every other American home, of which there are 30,000,000, has a radio recelver. The official 1930 census showed a total of 12,078,345 radios in use, the figure having been compiled through | questions asked at every door by the | enumerators. With an average of 4.1 persons per family, it was calculated that the total audience as of that date was 49521214 Since then, the in- dustry estimates 4,600.908 sets have been sold to homes which under the 1930 census were without radios, and that the total thereby has been in- creased to 16,679253. On the same basis. it estimates the total audience at 68,384,937 Considered Reliable. While the new figures are unofficial they nevertheless are considered re- liable. They were based on manu- facturers’ production records and retail sales surveys conducted by the Mc- Graw-Hill Publishing Co. of New York, and compiled by Broadcasting Maga- | zine ~ They confirm other trade sta- | tistics showing that radio set sales, | especially of midgets, have maintained | a ‘substantial volume even during the | last two vyears of curtailed buying. Sales, however. have been far below the peak levels in dollar volume at- tained during the prosperity period prior to 1929. Three States Given Lead. The greatest concentration of radios, according to the survey, is in the Middle Atlantic States of New York, | New Jersey and_Pennsylvania. which also led in the official census two years ago. These States combined showed an increase of 1,345,180 homes having | sets during the past two years. to bring their total to 4.876.712. The New | England States, second in numbers of sets, increased by 406653 to a total of 1.478,000. With an’ increase of 695250 new homes with receivers. New York State maintained its position as leader in total sets. This brought its total to |2524,373. " Pennsylvania again is sec- |ond, " increasing during the two-year | period by 412,000 sets to a total of | 1.488.770." Illinois showed identically | the same increase to bring its total to 1.487130 «Copyright | WARDMANS ASK $31,977 | Excess Taxes Paid in 1926, Says ‘ Suit of Corporation. | 'The Wardman Corporation of this | city has filed suit in the United States | Court of Claims for refunds of corporate | | income taxes alleged to have been paid | | in excess of the amount legally due, in | the sum of $31,977.77, with interest, for | the year 1926 | _Having failed to obtain the refund from the Bureau of Internal Revenue, | the taxpayer went to court.
