A—16 * . SHTHSONAN GETS REPTLE EXHBI Fransparent Tadpole and \ Tail-Biting Snake Among j Weird Curiosities. Specimens of strange creatures that ight have stepped out of a hair-raising ightmare have just been received by he Smithsonian Institution. These reptiles were collected by Dr. l';]lcf of the Kingdom of s fishery re- on is the g . Of all living animals, est in appearance to the great | s. The specimen received here ¢ 7 feet long. Some have been ported measuring about 14 feet, al- though the average specimen is less | $han half that length. | Seen going through the jungle, Dr. | mith reports, this creature has a real aurlike appearance, with its long | mall head. and long. heavy tail. eird _creature occasionally in- | he city limits of Bangkok, lhc‘ ece capital, where it makes its ap- | als running through | n the thick shrub- destructive of ducks 0 more than for presentation to the old. il-Biting Snake.” | ‘The collection contains a specimen of | ¢he ngu kon kob, or “tail-biting snake.” | #The belief is quite general among the Siamese,” Dr. Smith writes, “that it | bites with its tail. One version of the | pular bellef is that it bites with its | B‘e’ad when the moon shines and with | its tail on dark nights. One of my as- | sistants assures me that a friend was | killed by being bitten with the tail of this snake. It is not infrequently seen on Bangkok roads on rainy nights, tightly with its head concealed s folds and its tail standing erect.” | other striking animal is the ngu | seng atit or ray snake.” It is one | of the most beautiful creatures in the | reptile kingdom—a sort of living dia- | mond. Even in the preservative it | shows the beautiful glowing iridescence | gests the name given it by | e natives. It is reputed to be very | poisonous. | The collection contains several speci- | ns of the ngu saiman pra-indra, | times known as the “Brahmin cur- | 1 d snake.” It has remarkable | leaping ability. “One morning as I gof out of bed,” Dr. Smith writes, “a full- sized snake of this species was sunnin; itself on the sill of a double door open- ing on a verandah. As I approached it ran behind the door and climbed to the top, whence it sprang to the rail of the verandah. The distance was sbout seven feet.” Other Queer Snakes. Some of the other queer snakes in the collection are: The white-mouthed chinchuk—an almost pure-white snake with some sharp black markings. It is reputed by the Siamese country people to be ver: poisonous and Dr. Smith astounded them when he told them that he kept one on his bed to catch mosquitoe: This very striking creature, he say: may be an Albino form of a quite com: mon variety. The rat snake—nearly two yards long | ~—which climbs bamboo clusters to catch birds | The peacock snake—a combination of brown. golden yellow, black, pink and bright red. The tail is intensely | red. The tip of the tongue sometimes is black. | The fish snake—which can be caugh by baiting a line with a whole smal fish. Ordinarily it is not poisonous, but the Siamese claim that it become: extremely poisonous when it is gbout to have young. | “Transparent Tadpoles.” Among the curiosities in the collec tion were some “transparent tadpoles. While light passes through their bodies they are not perfectly transparent, but | of a dusky gray coior with traces of a purple iridescence underneath. | Another queer specimen is the “chin knock,” a species of jungle toad which | was recovered from the stomach of a| snake. A _popular belief is that this toad may hit a person's bare foot with | its lower jaw and make a poisonous wound, like a ring-worm, with its milky | mucous. The popular remedy is to treat the wound with scraped human fingernails applied with water. | The collection contains specimens of | some of the most deadly reptiles on earth, including the terrifying “krait’ of the Siamese jungle and some beau tifully colored water snakes whose bite | —fortunately almost never received by | & human being—means practically cer- tain death. = -~ Cotton spinners of Belgium are fa. vyoring American cotton in preference to that from India.
