THOSUAN ASIRSH CAHPAEN 065 Dail Candidate and Detective Shot While Speaking—Cos- | grave Makes Plea. By the Associated Press. DUBLIN, February 15.—The Irish | election campaign, one of the chief| 4ssues in which is the question of closer | or more distant relations with Great | Britain, entered its last day today with the blood of two citzens, one of them | & candidate, across its trail. | Patrick Reynolds, a member of the Government party in the Dail Elrtnnn" and candidate for re-election, and a detective named McGeehan were shot | and killed while delivering politcal ad- | the present government should be able | man named Joseph Leedy was ar- Tested. | The two men were witnesses the day | beidte at an inquest into the death | of James Vaugh, a leader of the op-| posing Republican party, who, it wa.s‘ charged, had been ill-treated by guards while a prisoner in Balliamore Bar-| racks. McGeehan testified that Vaugh | had been treated in the kindliest manner. | | Cosgrave's Fifth Appeal. | President Cosgrave. who, after 10 years in office, is making his fifth ap-| peal to the country in tomrrow's voting, argues that Great Britain is Ire- 1and’s best market and that the Saorstat will benefit tremendously through Em- pire preference tarfl treaties which the present government should be able to_negotiate with Westminster. | Eamonn de Valera, leader of the Fianna Fail, principal opposition candi- | date, holds, on the contrary, that Ire- | land can never prosper until she has severed all the links that bind her to‘ the British Empire and makes herself independent and self-contained. Adherents of De Valera have prom- | 4sed abolition of the oath to the British | King from the Saorstat constitution, | modification of the present position of | the governor general in the Saorstat, | discontinuance of payment of £3,000,000 | (about $10,500,000) in land annuities to | England, and provision of employment for the country's jobless | There was every prospect. however, | that the election would be one of the quietest ever held in the Saorstat. The Fianna Fail, fearful perhaps lest they alienate conservative opinion, have con- ducted a_ remarkably moderate cam- | ;n.lrn. Disorders from any quarter | ave been few. { Predicts Large Gain. | De Valera has predicted he will gain perhaps 77 or 80 seats in the Dalil's membership of 153. There is widespread feeling among politicians, however, that the Cosgrave party, Cumann Na NGael, with its al- lies, the Farmers, the Independents and Independent Labor, will find its present membership of 85 reduced somewhat, but will be still in the majority. The present state of the parties is: For the government, Cumann Na NGael, 65; Farmers, 6; Independents, 12; Independent Labor, 2; total pro- government, 85.
