THE SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTO D. C, FEBRUARY' 1 FINANCIAL ) il WEEKLY SUMMARY OF THE :NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE ADVANGEINSTOCK LIST IS GENERAL Gains Are Sprinkled Liberal- ly Throughout Market in Strong Advance. BY CLAUDE A. JAGGER, Associated Press Financial Editor. NEW YORK, February 13.—8tocks soomed upward in one of the most spec- tacular rebounds of the past two years today. The abrupt upturn which grected the proposal to increase the flexibility of the Federal Reserve System on Thursday was resumed at a swifter pace after yesterday's holiday, as buying orders swept into the market, driving the bears into a little panic all their own, Profit-taking on the advance, which earried many stocks 10 to more than 20 points above their lows of last Wednes- day. was readily absorbed, and closing quotations were near the day’s best, al- though there was some recession in the final dealings. Net gains ranged from about 2 to 15 points. The turnover was around 2,500,000 shares, the largest for & Saturday session in recent months. Striking Advances. Union Pacific made the extreme up- surge of 18!, points, and closed up 12. Amercan Telephone got up 15%, and closed with a net gain of 14';. Santa Fe rose 121, and closed up 9%. United States Steel closed up 5 points, within a point of the best. Miscellaneous is- sues up 5 to 7 points included American Can. Allied Chemical, du Pont. West- inghouse Electric, Consolidated Gas and others. Union Carbide and General Electric gained more than 3. General Motors advanced but moderately, how- ever, gaining less than 2 points. The ticker fell behind trading and it was found necessary to omit the vol- ume of individual transactions to keep with transactions for a time. ume fell off in the last few minutes, however, as the list eased off from the | dav's best prices Aside from the widespread approval of the Glass-Steagall bill to increase | the flexibility of the Federal Reserve System, voiced over the holiday, new developments to add impetus to the ad- vance were few. The Thursday an- nouncement that Ford Motor Co. was going into active production once more continued to exercise a favorable influ- ence, together with reports of workers being called back by the Ford plants and the plants of suppliers of &nm Reports from Youngstown indicated that steel mill production schedules next week called for operations at about the current rate of 36 per cent of capacity, up 1 point from a week ago. Among earnings statements, that of New York Central for 1931, showing net of only The vol- | STOCK GAINS LAID TO MOVEMENT FOR BROADENING CREDIT (Continued From First Page.) to questions that involve the economy of the United States and most of Europe. ‘The notable improvement this week has been in the market for securities. Business shows no change. It is as flat and inert as ever. The cumulative effect of this is witnessed in another long list of downward revisions in divi- dends. Standard Statistics this week estimated that the profits to corpora- tions last year were only about half those of 1930. Commodities improved | late this week with securities. One of | the expectations of the banking legis- |lation 1s that it will promote a more | confident attitude toward commodities on the part of consumers. The iron |and steel trade is in the doldrums, | lacking encouragement from the larg- est of its normal supporters. The army of the unemploy 1s now larger than it has been at any time during the | depression. Serious consideration is | being given in Congress to Federal aid | to relieve the Nation-wide distress. | _ At the same time the income of the Government is falling off to an extent tiat alarms those who are responsible | for bringing the budget to a balance. ‘Within a month of the period when the first installments of this year’s income taxes are payable, there has been no determination of the schedule of rates to be applied to 1931 incomes. The fiscal situation of the Government is one that cannot be corrected by any of the measures that have been adopt- ed to improve credit or business senti- ment, though it is as important that it be remedied in the interest of greater public confidence and the preservation of the gold standard in this country as any of those now pressing for relief, (Copyright, 1932.) 49 cents & common share, against $7.21 per share for 1930, attracted attention, but did not prevent the stock from rising 5 points. American Can reported n§§0°1 $5.11 a share, against $8.08 for 1930. Exchange Situation. Foreign exchanges generally turned against the dollar, as expected, in view of the reported efforts in some specu- ative quarters abroad to interpret im- portant banking developments in this country as bearish on dollar exchange. Bankers pointed out that the proposed liberalization of the Federal Reserve would give it only some of the freedom enjoyed by the Bank of France in cur- rency issue. Nevertheless, franc cables were quoted st 3.943, cents, up 13-16 of a point from Thursday. Sterling gained 1% cents from Thursday, ruling at $3.45 for cables. Picture enlargements, so familiar in this country, are being sold {n Germany | by canvassers representing American ' concerns.
