4 Gulli Wins Girl Bowling Title ROLLS 117 AVERAGE FOR DIXIE HONORS Victory Clinches No. 1 Rank‘ Among Fair Duckpinners. Mrs. Miltner Trails. BY FRANCIS E. STAN. NY doubt that may have been entertained in regard | to where the No. 1 United | States woman's duckpin | ranking would go was dispelled | definitely last night when Lor-| raine Gulli, shooting a score of‘; 1,057—an average of 117-4—top- | ped a field of 42 of the countrys | expert girl bowlers to win the| Dixie Sweepstakes, emblematic | of the championship of the South. For the fourth consecutive year the No. 1 ranking is assured the Washing- ton girl. | Rolling sets of 368, 332 and 357, Miss | Gulli, chronic high average shooter in | the District and Washington gm; Jeagues, shook off the persistent chal- lenges of Margaret Miltner, another | Washingtonian, to win by 28 pins. Third place went to a Baltimore girl, Viola | Raycob, who rolled 972. Irene Scott of | Washington and Helen Randlett of Richmond tied for fourth place with 960. Mrs. Miltner Dies Hard. Down to the three final frames it was # brilliant battle between Miss Gulli and Mrs. Miltner. Lorraine, a heavy favorite against the field, blasted out a 368 score in the first block at the Lucky Strike yesterday afternoon, but Mrs. Miitner was only 5 sticks behind. Both girls faltered in the second block st the Columbia as compared to their first three games. However, Miss Gulli's 332 was better by 20 pins than Mrs. Miltner's total. It was in the final block at the Ren- dezvous drives in the evening that Mrs. Miltner made her best bid. She shot 124 and 120 in her first two strings, but Miss Gulli countered with 132 and 108. With only a slim chance left, Mrs. Miltner. who pinned 110 in the last game, saw Lorraine roll 117 and pocket the $100 first prize. As a result of her victory Miss Gulli virtually assured herself of the Na- tional Duckpin Congress' top ranking, for in addition to the Dixie Stakes title, £he also won The Evening Star's event whh a 385 total and is leading both the District and Washington leagues with record-breaking averages. Foul Is Costly. Mrs. Mitner, whose average Wwas 114-3, mght easily have won had she meade more of her spare breaks. Her | first block at the Lucky Strike was | well rolled, but a foul, costing eight | sticks and several boxes under five pins at the Columbia was responsible for her loss. In one game at the Rendezvous she missed the same single- pin break three times. She collected $50 as her share of the purse. The event drew 13 Baltimore girls, 5 from Richmond, 1 from Hyattsville, 1 from Rosslyn, 1 from Alexandria and 18 from Washington. At no time after the first block were any of the con- tenders except the winner and runner- up in the race. Fifteen prizes were awarded. nine for the two highest games and single high set of each block. Polly Dozier of Richmond finished fifth and Billie But- ler of Washington sixth. Those who received minor prizes of 85 for high scores were: Pirst block. Prances Kreig of Baltimore. Carolyn Hiser of Hyatts- ville and lois Clopton of Richmond. Becond block winners were Jennie Mal- colm and Catherine Quigley of Wash- ington and Emma Ritter of Baltimore. ‘Third block prizes went to Sue Miller of Baltimore and Dorothy Lawson and Anne Grubbs of Richmond. BLICK'S MIDGETS BEST Top Mount Rainier Bowling Team in Duckpin Competition. | Blick's Midgets defeated Mount | Rainier Midgets by 48 pins—1,509 to 1460—in the second block of their | home-and-home duckpin match last night at the Arcadia. Blick's also won the opening block. V. P.|. FREE SHOTS TELL | Bixteen of 18 Sunk, Scoring Win Over W. and L. Quint. LINT, Mich,, February 13.—The Big Bowling Ball vs. Rifle con- test here tonight resulted in a victory for the bowler, Policeman Walter Wegener. He defeated Policeman Bill Glau- den, 99 to 98, or 2 to 1, whichever way you look at it. At any rate, out of 100 shots, with a rifle at the head of a bowling pin, Glauden missed 2, while Wegener hit the pin every time with a bowling ball. The match attracted a crowd of 1,000. STRAND MAT CARD WILL INCLUDE KLEY. Animated Pretzel to Tackle Fred Carone, Newcomer, Thursday Night. RITZ KLEY, the animated pretzel, will tackle a newcomer, Frederico Carone, and George Kotsonaros, former Hollywood bad man of the films, will oppose Tiger Nelson in two of the three 30-minute time limit preliminaries to the feature wrestling match between Fred Grob- meler and Matros Kirilenko next Thursday at the Strand Theater. A fifth match is in the making and will be announced tomorrow, according to Promoter Joe Turner. Grobmeler and Kirilenko several weeks ago staged a wild draw in a pre- liminary match at the Washington Auditorium, which will not be available this week, and they will be pitted Thursday in & match to the finish. Grobmeier had succeeded in getting his hook scissors on Kirilenko just as the whistle was blown in their previous | match, but prior to that the Russian had the better of the going. The semi-final will mark the debut here of Ernies Dusek, younger brother of Rudy. The little fellow, only 22, weighs around 220 pounds, and will oppose Doc Wilson. the Philadelphia interne. Kley, German wrestler-contortionist, has made decided hits in his two a pearances here, both of which were easy wins. Not much is known of Frederico Carone, his opponent. Kotsonaros, conqueror of Sandor Szabo and a flock of other well known mat artists, is a colorful matman who is said to have been driven out of the movies by the talkies. Tiger Nelson formerly was a stock figure here. Women, it has been announced, will be admitted free to all except the ring- side and boxes, despite the limited ca. | pacity of the Strand, which will be used for the next two shows. The usual reservations, according Turner, will be taken care of as in the auditorium. SUNDAY SCHOOL LOOP BASKET BALL GAMES Mt Ver. M. Melton, f..... Taylor. 1. Monroe, 1 Fry. 1 Gouteau, ¢ Gray. g ..
