4 THE SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, JANUARY 17, 1932—PART FIVE. Blakeney of Baltimore Rolls Record Set of 687 to Take Campbell Stake Lead ANDERSON TRALS BY SINGLE MAPLE He Holds Duckpin Mark BOWLER ALSO GAINS NEW SUIT OF CLOTHES. 1,277 Top Score at End of Tenth Game in Classic. P. Harrison Third. BY FRANCIS E. STAN. HOOTING five brilliant strings for a sweepstake set record of 637, Ed Blakeney, one of | the two Balti~ore bcwling‘ stars competing last night as- sumed by a single pin the lead at the end of the second block of the | Howard Campbell Sweepstakes at the Rendezvous alleys. Blakeney’s sensational score of last night, plus his 590 roiled a week ago, gave him a total of 1,277 for the first 10 games. Johnny Anderson of Washington trailed by a single pin when he rolled 654 last night Baltimore's bespectacled star, who carries the reputation of being a streak bowler, was not conceded much of a chance of winning following his 590 set last week when 16 other pinmen bettered 600, but he pounded the pins for games of 133,139, 131, 141 and 143 to forge to the front in Washington’s an- | nual battle of bowling bambinos Blakeney, because he rolls with North- east Temple in the District League, s eligible to compete in the Campbell 'Stakes along with another Baltimorean, Ray Von Dreele, who is “imported” to roll with the Fountain Hams. Pantes, Brill Tumble. Last night's block was almost as sen- gational as the opener. bettered 600 in the second block and both of the leaders, Louis Pantos and Paul Brill, were displaced. Pantos, whose 666 set a week 8go was sent into discard as a Campbell *Stakes record by Blakeney's effort last night, dropped closer to his average with 573 and tumbled into sixth place. Brill, rated, like tos, as a “dark horse,” rolled a mediocre 551, dropping him out of the first 10. Anderson, young member of the Con: vention Hall team, and Paul Harriso youthful captain of the same quint, held the attention of most of the capacity crowd when both made brilliant splurges. Anderson opened Wwith 142, fell back to 109, and then shot & sensa. tional 162, He finished with 127 and 114 and a 654 set, giving him a 10-| game total of 1276. Harrison was well on his way toward the leadership until the fifth gam= when he was stopped cold by a flurry of splits. Paul rolled 130, 150, 137, 122 and 93 for a 623 total, giving him a score of 1,250, 27 pins behind Blakeney. Clarke About Done. Bradley Mandley, whose 638 set last Baturday was good for fourth place, was forced to saare that position with Earl McPhilomy. Both hav~ scores of 1,249, Louis Pantos is sixth, followed by Ollie Pacini, Max Rosenberg, Hokie Smith and Charlie Walson Still another name was certain to be added to the list of those Campbell champions who failed to defend the title successfully when Astor shot only 575, leaving him almost hopelessly behind. Sam Corcoran of Georgetown substi- tuted for Dave Burrows, who is nursing an infured leg. and won back Dave's entry fee of $25 with a 168 string, the | highest of the night. The classic will wind up next Sat vrday at Convention Hall with any of the first 10 having a fine chance to win and several others bearing slim hopes Harrison, one of the most noted monev bowlers in the East,.probably will go into the final block ' _favorite despite the lead of 27 pins bv Blakeney and 26 by Anderson. Blakeney is in- consistent and Anderson must concede Harrison much experience. ARMST;dNG IS VICTOR. Armstrong High School basket ball team won two games, defeating Car- doza A. 'Promise of Out-o_f-Town Girls ' To Bowl Revives Blick Plan For Marathen of Fifty Games | | IS bowling “stadium” officially christened yesterday, Promoter John 8. Bligk now is turning his attention to his next big stunt —a 50-game sweepstakes for women. Since the start of the season Blick has harbored the 50-game test in his mind, but practically abandoned it last | week when he became assured of not | more than three entries. However, he received word yesterday from Lotta Janowitz of Baltimore and Mary Staple- ton of Norfolk that they were planning to enter. The Orlole girl won the United States singles champlonship last year, | while the Norfolk lass has rolled the highest set ever to be rolled by a woman | south of Washington—3177. With these two entries assured. Blick announced yesterday that he will stage the novel event on the afterncon of January 30 in the Convention Hall “stadium.” Edna Johnson, Merceda Isemann and Doris Goodall, all of this city, are certain entries, ac- cording to Blick. The girls will start rolling at 2 o'clock in the afternoon and competition will end 15 minutes after the first girl to roll the 50 strings has finished. In other ~ worcs, in order to be eligible for a prize the bowlers must finish within 15 minutes of the first to roll 50 games. If one girl averages 90, but finishes more than 15 minutes before | another girl who averages 100, the first girl will be declared the winner. Blick will guarantee at least $50 to the winner, $25 to the runner-up and $15 for the third place winner. The entrance fee will be $10 per person including games. All of the entrance fee will be put into the prize fund, as well as all receipts taken in at the “gate” of the “stadium.” In addition to the first prize of $50, a gold medal emblematic of the 50- game sweepstakes championship of the world will be awarded to the winner by Blick. This 50-game sweepstakes is similar to the 100-game sweepstakes Blick held st year for men, anc which proved o popular. Not only does it require skill, but stamina, and only thcse girls with almost effortless deliveries will be seen in the event Only one bowling event of major im- portance is carded for this week and that is the wind-up of Washington's pin show of shows, the Howard Camp- bell Sweepstakes. On Wednesday night in Atlanta, Ga., John I. Bell rolled a game of 196. The next night on the Recrea- tion Alleys Keith shot 197. Bell's score gave the South its first record of more than local note, but Keith’s count, one pin better, took it away 24 hours later.
