S. EXPENSE CUT Attacks Centralization of Gov- ernment in Washington. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, December 8.—With the plea that Government expenditures be reduced “to a point where taxes can be borne by the average man and woman,” former Senator James W. Wadsworth, jr., of New York, yesterday in a radio talk called on the American people to “put a halt to the further centralization of government in Wash- ington.” Mr. Wadsworth spoke over a coast- to-coast network of the Naticnal Broadcasting Co., starting a radio cam- paign of the American Taxpayers’ League, a non-partisan organization, to “make the Nation tax-ccnscious.” He asserted recent centralization of American Government had caused the undermining of self-government and the burdening of the people with taxes “There can be no question that the centralization of power in the ernment at Washington has been going cn to an extraordinary degree during the last 20 years,” he sald. “As government expands by leaps and bounds, expenditures do likewise, and, n(‘ccssarlly taxes pile up in like de- gree. * “The multiplication of commissions, boards_and bureaus at Washington since Roosevelt laid down the pre! dcn(‘y has been simply immense. * * * “Ycu may ask what all this has to do with taxation. The money which the Government spends does not fall from the sky, nor is it picked up from the streets. The Federal Government today employs more than 600,000 per- sons, exclusive of the Army and Navy. Their compensation and their other expenditures * * * come * * ¢ from the pockets of the men and women who work for a living.” During & perfcrmance at the Gate Theater, in London, Margery Binner, the star, fell from the stage into the audience and broke an ankle. NEW PHILADELPHIA, Ohio, Decem- ber 8 (#) —Working quietly for 30 min- utes, three men robbed the Citizens' State Bank in Strasburg shortly before noon yesterday and fled with their ac- complice and $13,500 in currency, gold and silver and an undetermined amount of bonds. No one in the village knew a robbery was going on inside the bank, as the men, each with a revolver, carried a machine gun in a paper bag into the kank and returned to their automobile with money sacks full of plunder. As the bandits sped north toward Canton and Massillon, John T. Miller, vice president, and Miss Kathryn Ka- pitsky, a clerk, the only ones in the bank at the time, spread the alarm. No trace of the bandits has been found. Deaths I Reported. Oharles 8. Fendrick, 81, en route George- | town University Hospitpl. unningham, 75, Homeopathic Hos- | pital. Roger P. NEW YORK, December 8.—Winter cracked the whip—a biting northwest gale—over the East today. The wind, which at time attained a velocity of 60 miles an hour, pushed the thermometer down into the twenties. There it will stay for awhile, weather observers said. Extending far to sea, the forceful wind churned the ocean and caused the delay of from 24 to 36 hours of six ocean liners scheduled to dock here yesterday and today. Only one liner, the Tuscania, man- aged to force its way through the storm. Capt. Willlam Rome said it was “one of the roughest trips of my experience.” In Canada the prairie provinces felt the coldest weather of the season. In Prince Albert it was 28 degrees below zero and in Winnipeg 18 below. One death from exposure was re- ported in New York. Marriage Licenses. Herman W.
