CHICAGO, December 8 —Chicago's | “toughest gangster"—Frank McErlane | —was a police prisoner again today— this time in connection with the murder of his wife. McErlane, described by the police as @ “gun crazy” South Side hoodlum, sur- rendered to Chicago detectives at a hotel in Madison, Wis,, and was hur- ried back to Chicago over to route kept secret because of the apparent fear he might be ambushed by rival gangsters. The hoodlum who is listed by the Chicago Crime Commission as a “pub- lic enemy,” refused to discuss the kill- ing of his wife, formerly known as Mar- | ian Miller of St. Louis.
